The Fitness Thread

Kicked off a Garmin 10k coach yesterday. Aiming to get my 10k to 49 mins, my PR is an irritating 50.07.... I'm nowhere near that level of fitness at the moment and hopefully this will push me to train over winter.

How do you get that via Garmin?

I'm working my way back to fitness after suffering from runner's knee (I think that's what it is - could be age though...) and a fitness plan might be wise.

In the Garmin connect app, open up the burger menu and select "Training" then "Training plans" and follow the screen tips to set up.

There's 5k,10k and HM. You can pick from just completing a 5k or in a certain time. Coach Jeff is apparently the best for returning from injury (source Google when I researching the coach options).

Wasn't sure where else to put this...

When I moved to Florida, I weighed ~190lbs (~86kg). That was way overweight for my body. As of today, I down to ~145lbs (~66kg).

I know that probably sounds unhealthily underweight, but for my body type, it's exactly where I need/want to be. I'm so beyond thrilled. I can fit in my college clothes again!

Well done Alan!

At my heaviest a few months ago I was almost exactly 2 of you 😬

Cheers, guys.
It's been a five year journey back to a fit weight, but nothing motivates quite like an exorbitant monthly gym fee. 🤣

How many times a week do people run?

I've been alternating between cycling and running, so only running 3 x a week and never on consecutive days. However, its getting very miserable out on the bike (yesterday was particularly crappy) so am thinking about running more often - perhaps 5 x a week. Is that too much? Just thinking of doing 5 to 7.5 km four times and then a longer run (hopefully 10km) once a week. Since starting running (in September) I've had no injury problems so don't feel too worried.

Just run as often as you're comfortable with - if your body starts complaining, cut it back. And maybe build up to that amount to ensure you're not overdoing it!

I used to do up to 3 runs a week and it worked really well. I'd do 5k x 2 and then a long one at weekends (at least 10k, sometimes a bit more). Not done anything in a few weeks now as my knee still isn't right, so I'm going to give it some time to heal. It's bloody annoying because running massively helps my well being - mentally and physically so it's frustrating not being able to do it.

Thanks for that - I'm the same on well being, I have to get out and do something at least once a day. I got pretty miserable at the start of lockdown and my daily exercise is the only thing getting me out of the house.

Going to try 4 runs this week and see how it goes.

The Garmin 10k plan I'm on has me running 4 times a week. It's mostly fine but I'm feeling a bit knackered this week (combo of lots of exercise, needing to take some leave and time of year I think). With that in mind I'm probably taking an extra rest day tomorrow!

As Langers said, listen to your body and cut back if/when you need to. I would say 5 times a week is pushing a little but start with 4 and see how you feel in a couple of weeks.

I run once or twice but supplement that with a session on the turbo, a couple of hours on the road bike and a HIIT core session. I like the variation, moreso given the weather at this time of year.

On the subject of running, I often find myself in 'digestive discomfort' (aka 'imminent Radcliffe') after 5k but can't work out why - I've tried not eating various food types at lunchtime the day of the run, no caffeine several hours prior and no snacks or drinks immediately before but no success. I wonder if the medical geniuses among TWF could offer an idea and solution?

I do know that exercising hard will push blood away from your gut and into your muscles. Maybe that can affect it.

I'm also on a Garmin 10k plan (Greg), but it only has me down to run 3x a week (I'm in week 5). Going to sneak an extra one in today and see how it goes.

I'm doing Amy, thought she was 3 per week and some cross training. She's actually 4 per week and whilst it's working well 3 hard runs and 1 easy has left bit a bit knackered this week!

My pace is increasing though, and that's the ambition for me in running through this programme!

My pace is definitely not high! I started with Jeff, but his run-walk-run thing was boring, so switched over.

Had my induction at the gym yesterday. I'm doing 10 minutes each on the running machine (well, warm up walk), cross trainer (random hills) and the bike, 1500m on the rower and then 3x15 on each of 5 machines.

The end game here is to lose enough weight to be able to get to my seat in the NB without feeling like my legs are made of concrete.

Another 2 stones should do it.

This "plan" has been working well for me over the last few weeks, after doing too much in the summer and getting injured.

Sunday - 10 mile tempo
Monday - rest (maybe half an hour swim at most)
Tuesday - 5km steady
Wednesday - 5km fast
Thursday - 5 a side football
Friday - 5km steady
Saturday - rest

I think it's really important to recognise how your body feels - and i'm really bad at that, as soon as you feel sore in places you don't usually, just have another rest day.
