Football fans at there worse success at all costs

I vaguely recall one coach instructing his players to put their corners into the side netting because, statistically, the defending team was more likely to score on the counter...

Some interesting stats and thoughts in this.

* Less than 3% of corners result in goals.
* 40% of corners fail to beat the first man.

Wolves under Nuno would beat the first stat defensively and challenge the second offensively

That's ridiculous.

You've eliminated the chance of scoring completely but also conceded possession for the sake of maybe conceding (can't find the stat you mention anywhere).

This is my problem with the use of stats and data. Instead of improving corners and reducing the chance of counter attacks by actual coaching and tactical change you've got these clowns hiding behind data.

It's one of my biggest moans, the quality of balls from corners and it's not just Wolves.
I don't expect them to be perfect every time but the amount of over/under hit corners in the Premier league astounds me.

They are aiming for the golden zone where it just clears the first man but then is at a good height to head in.

Fractionally underhit and the first man clears it and fractionally overhit and it’s too high to direct goalwards.

Obviously this doesn’t legislate for the ones that get cleared at knee high. That’s just terrible.

Aye, pretty much.

It's the equivalent of a bowler in cricket looking for a golden delivery every time, the one that pitches leg and hits off. Where really you're best off playing the percentages.

I don't know why near post corners flicked on to the back stick went out of fashion, they were lethal for a while. Think George Graham era Arsenal, they got so many goals from that. Steve Bould would have been quite the assist king back in the day.

It's bizarre that they keep doing it. You don't get QB's throwing deep shots all night for the same reason. When it works it's spectacular but percentage wise it rarely works.

And trying the same thing over and over leads defenders to defend the same area over and over.

The lack of ingenuity because of misuse of stats bothers me greatly.
