The Golf Thread

Jesus this is so bad. Really feel for Harrington, he's been let down by a fair few this tournament. I didn't think the US were sensational the first couple of days, more that they did enough to win - but today's been an absolute battering, fair play to them. And a proper young team as well

Is there another one next year, because this one was delayed a year?

Mcilroy, Poulter and Westwood are the players to win..not where anyone would have put their money

Love golf, and The Masters is my favourite major, but does anybody know if Tiger is likely to tee it up this week…..so much to talk about with all those brilliant players but, just like the football, such an obsession with a chosen few.

The BBC report on the first round didn't have a single picture of the Korean guy in the lead, it was all Tiger the whole article.

Sky coverage was Tiger TV for all the time he was on the course yesterday.

Thing is, he’s a cunt, and a horrible cunt at that.

Much better players in the current tournament without added cuntery.

There's not a bigger name in American sport though and with Sky taking their feed from the US it's always going to be that way. His story is intriguing after nearly losing his leg, after winning a Masters with his back issues, although Johnny's description of him as a man is accurate

Interesting, yes, the only show in town, no - do other fans really want to watch 10 hours of repetitive coverage on 1 American when they could have 10 insightful hours on DJ, Koepka, JT, Morikawa, Spieth, Scheffler, Cantlay, Finau, Zalatoris and Woods.

Or are they not expecting people to watch it start to finish, and get bored?

They know the majority of people who aren't avid golfers, just want to turn on and see how Tiger is doing. If he's not on, they probably turn back off.

Good they can fuck off with him

Thing is, from a sporting perspective, I reckon 90% of viewers want him to be 2 back on Sunday. Just to see that red, hear that roar, and see people collapse and see tiger win, would be a phenomenal sporting story. He's the greatest player the game has ever seen and to see him being competing again after his surgeries is something special. He's not healthy enough to win anymore, but the romance is still there. If he was 7 over after Thursday, he wouldn't have been on screen on Friday

He's been an absolute shit in his time, but sport is chock full of compromise. I love racing, but hate the fact that horses will die tomorrow. I love football but hate the fact that Qatar have a world Cup, and I'll still watch every minute I can. Almost every sporting event has an unsavoury angle. Fosun will undoubtedly have profited from slave labour amongst their earnings, but we separate that for the sake of the relief that sport can give us. I think Tiger winning would be a hell of a sporting story, and I acknowledge that it's sad that I find it easy to separate the man and his awful behaviour from the sporting romance, but we all do it to some degree or another.

Could be a cracking finish - Smith and Scheffler in the same group - Smith’s irons and putter heating back up, and Scheffler just showing he is human on the back nine there.

Kudos for him on his unflappability on 18 - that could have been a 3-shot swing easily without a very calm head.

Just read that Mickleson and Johnson in 2 years of Saudi sports washing are going to earn as much as their previous career winnings. Sponsors losses need to be taken into account short-term, but that's some incentive to park your morals at the 1st tee.
