What is chitting and why is it necessary? I'm moving into a house with garden come June and plan to grow my own veg in a raised bed but will also grow taters in a container or bag. Here in Germany there don't seem to be any varieties, only hard/semi-soft/soft and they all sprout after a few days in the cupboard. Can't I just take some of them and put them in a container when they are sprouting?

Bump up!!

A couple of weeks ago, we had gorgeous weather! Then frosts were forecast, so I brought all my little seedlings etc into the house.

Good job I did! Not because of frost, but the wind blew my greenhouse down the garden!!!

Anyhows,
Over the weekend I repotted my peas that had sprouted, from their trays, into bigger pots.
I planted more peas too. I guess I've had a 55% success rate with germination.
I've planted my 2nd batch of lettuce.
All 4 cucmbers have germinated.

Drum roll.......

My toms have finally shown signs of life! In the space of a couple of days I had 2, then another 3, & now over half have sprouted!

I've commandeered all the window sills, as they are still suggesting the risk of frosts, though I do want to get them back outside soon.

I've planted my 2nd batch of tomatoes, & now am just waiting for the peppers to weave their magic!

Can't wait to eat some of this stuff...

I'm worse with my impatience. Every year plant tomato seeds, then fuss over the tray(s) of soil for 4.5 weeks, with no sign of life & a gradually worsening demeanour whilst I grumble that nothing is growing/the seeds are bad/I've overwatered/I've underwatered/the gardening gods are out to piss me off with no tomatoes.

Then something sprouts & everyone bollocks me for moaning in the same way every year...

Fucking weather blew the greenhouse over & I've lost everything!:icon_cry:

My evenings this week will consist of firstly picking up the greenhouse, Throwing the contents into the garden composter, and then re planting absolutely everything...

Should be OK if your soil's quite free draining. Might get done by slugs though. Not the big slimy buggers that sludge around on the top, but the evil little ones that go underground and eat them. I've lost a good few spuds thanks to them. Not a lot you can do about them either.

Sorry to hear about the demise of your grenhouse Lemon. That must have been a real pisser!
Is it in your garden or on an allotment?

It's in my garden WH. It isn't a real greenhouse - it is one of those PVC ones. A decent sized one mind!

Sad thing is, I'd moved almost everything out into it saturday morning.
Lost my peas, lettuce, carrots, beetroot, onions and cucumbers.

Ah well, I'll just plant more. Bad thing is, I'm now going to spend a month moaning about nothing growing again! I've already been through that stage!

I like coming home from work & pottering in the garden growing things to eat. The taste benefits really are something else. As well as that, it is very relaxing & I can actually feel it taking the stress out of me. Plus it is nice to see the progress (not as nice as tasting it mind!) I'm too lazy to get an allotment. I can't be arsed with the waiting list. And as well as that, I like the access to the garden & the freedom to potter at will.

Well I cleared up the mess of the greenhouse. Virtually nothing survived - about 4 beetroot sproutlings, & 1 cucumber.
I repotted them, & planted new lettuce, peas, onions, tomatoes and carrots.

Sadly the 1 remaining cucumber has given up the ghost.
The beetroots appear to be ok though, so far...

New beetroots are starting to sprout, as are new lettuce and peas.

I had half a tray of toms I'd kept inside to keep warm. I've repotted these this weekend & put them in a much more secure greenhouse. Another tray of new toms remain on the window sill, with the peppers, or which only 2 have sprouted, & I am already fearful for one. I recall last year however believing that none would sprout, & eventually after about 2-3 months they all did - so there is still hope there!
