Cashley only retired a year or so ago, mind. Played for Derby in the playoff final.

It won't shock anyone, I'm sure, but all I can think of is how many times Sol Campbell has been told to "work your way up".

It's still crazy to me however you look at it, though. Pirlo was installed as their U21 manager less than two months ago.

Appointed manager of the U23 manager nine days ago, so very fast promotion. Has no experience whatsoever either so I can't see this going well, but is it a race thing? Unquestionable he has the job because of having played for them, but Milan went for Seedorf back in 2014 and he had no coaching experience either. Clubs like hiring ex-players, it might not be fair overall to other coaches but I'm not sure that specific race factor is at play here.

As the premier black players of the 'golden generation, I totally understand why Campbell and Cole are held up as the prime examples of the lack of black representation at manager level. Raheem Sterling did so.

The problem I have with that is one comes across as a fundamentally strange guy and the other as thick as pig shit. Now there are countless white managers who fit into either or both camps, we employed one fairly recently so I'm not saying that their skin colour hasn't been a barrier, just that Dwight Yorke, Andy Cole, Les Ferdinand and I'm sure plenty of others would be stronger examples.

Aye, I really only use Campbell because he's been the recent lightning rod.

As ever, in most cases of racial prejudice, it's not as if someone has looked at the black candidates and said, "nope, can't be hiring one of them". It's much more subtle than that anymore, which is a huge reason why it's so hard to root out.
