The Music Thread Strikes Back

I have a very complicated relationship with Morrissey these days. I can square listening to The Smiths with the easy "it's Johnny fucking Marr, man" get out clause, but you can't do that with his solo stuff. Helps that he hasn't brought out a good record since 2009.
Ah you can if you separate the art from the artist. For me, the strangest thing to come to terms with, was how drastic the shift was with Morrissey.
His output and lyrics in the 80s and 90s were very left leaning, but his recent comments and views are pretty much far right views.

there was always something culturally there with Moz. quite early on it was if he desired to be Charles hawtrey’s characters in the Carry on series and the camp humour from those movies was often reflected in his lyrics. I think that’s his ideal vision of GB. Ironic that he sang about not clinging to the old days anymore.

I’m sure I can recall an article where he slagged off a whole series of major black artists and he also labelled reggae as the most racist music, with zero context to its roots. Both pre 1990 or maybe around that time. and when he released national front disco, which must have been early 90s, MES, who knew him pretty well cos he said in earlier days Moz used to follow him into the Gents, basically said in a review that the Closets love all the SS type regalia.

he prob has a mixture of left/right views politically but he’s obv framed himself as anti multiculturalism.

See John Lydon for a similar journey
He did say in about 1985 that big business is very wise and that he’s crossed over to the other side. he still seems to think he invented punk and is the only one allowed to comment on it.

For me You are the Quarry was a good album and the last decent album he did, but in my eyes Vauxhall and I was a true true masterpiece and my favourite album ....

The Smiths are one of my favourite bands but Morrisseys rantings have almost ruined their music for me.
Saw him live at the NEC soon after he went solo and he was excellent.

I saw him at The Roundhouse in Camden in 2008, before he went totally off the reservation. Glad I did as I wouldn't buy a ticket to watch him now.

He played here last year and I really wanted to go but in the end couldn't justify it as there was a high chance:
  1. He would cancel
  2. He would go off on one about something and be a total cringe
Johnny Marr is playing 3 Irish gigs here this year and not a single one is in Dublin! I'm raging. Not often that happens.
I saw him at a festival 10yrs ago and he was the absolute highlight.

There's a track on the new Elbow album Audio Vertigo called From the River, which is fucking brilliant.

Just listened to UB40/Signing Off for the first time in 30 odd years.
It is just excellent.
Not sure I liked them very much after this, but it is a fantastic debut album.

New Charli XCX album June 7th! I'm hyped, pre-release tracks sound more hyperpop than her last record turned out to be.

Birthday gifts yesterday from Mrs DW, tickets for Weller (not seen him since around 2005 in Telford) and The Lightning Seeds (not seen them since December 1996, same day we beat City 3-0 at home and Dennison scored a beaut)

Fantastic line-up. Saw PW in Dublin year before last (I think - dont think it was last year 🤔). Great weather, great crowd, great night.
Can't get tickets this year anyway 🙁

Oh, these are separate gigs! One in October and one in December.

She's also mooting the idea of seeing Ride who I can take or leave (and take great pride in calling Andy Bell "Andy Bell out of Oasis" because I know it annoys her) but I'm happy enough to go if she wants to.

Be interested to hear what you think of PW after the gig. I've been listening to the Dan Jennings 'Desperately Seeking Paul' podcasts on you tube the last few months. Some interesting guests on there. Particularly if you've followed his career from early on.

Waiting for underworld to come on stage in Manchester. Loving their playlist & the venue is really good.
