The Music Thread Strikes Back

Personally, I think it is one of their poorer albums.

It’s better than their latest offering though.

I never realised that Eric Clapton was such a racist piece of shit. After performing with Van Morrison, it also seems that he is an anti-lockdown nutcase too.

Thankfully I have never been that much of a fan of his music.

Posted about this on the annoy thread. Difficult to separate the music from the views at times (as with Morrissey), thankfully in this case the song is shite (as is most of Clapton’s stuff).

Eric Claptons music, in my eyes, has been going downhill since the early 70's after Blind Faith and Delaney & Bonnie , since then it's just been elevator music, the racism thing is an odd one, yes we all know of the tirade in mid 70's (ironically in Brum !) but he's employed lots of black musicians over the years since, seems odd for someone with such views?

To say most of Claptons stuff is shite is quite clearly ridiculous, yes its gone down hill ovet the years as is true of most artists.
Didn't know about his racist views, where is this documented?

Plenty of racists have employed (exploited?) black people for a very long time.

When you employ Nathan East, one of the worlds best session musicians on and off for over 30 years I don't think that's exploitation. Sonny Emory the drummer on his last tour is a member of Earth Wind and Fire, so I doubt he is being held against his will ?

Clapton is probably my all time musical hero so this is really disappointing.

As vile as his racist slurs in the 70s were, that was during a time when he was heavily under the influence of alcohol. Of course, that doesn't excuse it but at least he has done a lot of good for black music over the decades since then.

Not quite sure why he's decided to add his name to this nonsense, there are ways and means to help musicians affected by lockdown but this isn't a sensible way of doing it.

Alcohol tends to make people more honest Langers.
Its highly likely Clapton is a racist prick, he comes from that generation were those types of comments were common so if he was comfortable saying that in front of a crowd back then, its likely that he holds those views and has just learned they arent acceptable in modern society so he doesnt voice them anymore.

treated myself to a few cds, as haven't bought any music this year, and gigs all postponed or cancelled. Music is huge to me, and has been significant in helping me manage my mental health through the pandemic. I would have really struggled without it.

Have acquired:
James - live in extraordinary times - this was a bit of a treat, and not listened to it fully, but got a deluxe box with 2cds and a dvd. the box is very well made!
Avalanches - we will always love you - only listened to half of this so far, but liked what I heard
Haggis Horns - Hot Damn! - funky as anything cd covering aspects of disco, funk, blues and all sorts. brilliant.
Sigur Ros - Odins Raven Magic - very ethereal live performance piece based on an icelandic poem
Late Night Final - a wonderful hope - from the main fella in public service broadcasting, a fairly noodley ambient 4 tracks that sounds really good!
Alexis Ffrench - Dreamland and also Evolution - Alexis Ffrench and dreamland in particular have been strong highlights this year.

Dreamland in particular has sleeve notes explaining the aim was music to aid people manage themselves, especially in dark times, when we feel alone, separate from others (these were written pre pandemic too!) and I have found that album to be especially helpful to me (the deluxe version on spotify is superb). this got me thinking about the positivity in these albums - a wonderful hope, we will always live you, even the james album is full of uplifting experiences, as they are phenomenal live. Can't help but wonder f sub-consciously I have been looking for stuff with a positive bent to it.

The Avalanches album is really good!
I believe they are doing a live stream of something at 8pm tonight?
Also saw the rolling stones are putting a couple of live shows up on their youtube for a limited period.

The Avalanches as in Frontier Psychiatrist, Avalanches ???
Have I heard a song from a group you've mentioned, after 10 years ?

Thems the ones. They released Wildflower a few years ago, and that was ok. This newie has grabbed me though. Very celestial!
