The players to come good 2020/21 season thread

As I've said on here in the past a lot of our signings/players tend to come good after a period of time with this great manager not always hit the ground running (look at Adama, Dendoncker) so while plenty of you ponder the transfer window etc I thought a nice little positive thread on players we already have that could make a big impact next season wouldn't be a bad thing.

So who do you think out of the current crop are likely to have big impacts/break through next season? There's a fair few with potential for me.

Vinagre - we've seen plenty of glimpses of what he can do, thought he played really well last night. With the possibility of a lot more game time early on think next season could be the season to shine for him.

Neto - again we've seen him play a part already this season but personally can only see him getting better and better a real talent think we'll see him play a bigger part next season.

Podence - Obviously we've seen glimpses post restart but I believe we'll see the best of Podence next season

Gibbs White - Kind of stalled this season surely must be looking to kick on next season. Kind of make or break season for him I think, there's still talent there in my opinion.

Killman - Thought he looked good in those European games etc when he played. Hopefully see him get more minutes (domestic cups likely)

Campana - will we see him start to be used to free up/rest Jimnez next season? Don't know a lot about him but surely they saw something when they brought him.

Vinagre will really benefit from (as it stands) a proper run in the team and playing in a weakened team, IMO. Gibbs-White would really benefit from the same, if Nuno trusts him I'd be fine with him being the midfielder that plays more, just hard to tell where he stands at the moment!

Podence is just a quality footballer, we have four really good quality options for the wide forward positions, all of whom have plenty of improvement in them!

Kilman is a decent squad player but we will sign a centre back I think - he'll get cup opportunities. No idea where Campana stands, rated enough to have train solely with first team rather than playing U23 games, we will see I guess!

Also think it is a big season for Diogo. Hopefully a couple of week rests, then hard work in "pre-season", he can recover the edge that makes him so important for us. If he performs consistently well it's a big big boost.

I know DW doesn't like loaning players out but I'd really like to see Kilman get a run of games somewhere, as with MGW, Campana and Buur. If they rip up the championship then great, we know they're ace and can call them back to Xmas. If they don't then we can move them on

Playing a handful of cup games won't help their progression, Nuno won't play them in premier league games and we won't have any euro commitments

We'll need to get a few in for this to happen though

I like MGW but I feel he may be close to being moved out
Kilman will get another season of being back up and Cup games and Campana needs to play some football. Don't think he even made an U23 appaearance after he arrived.

I'd disagree with two points in the OP. First of all I want to see have a real go in the domestic cups. So no 'giving minutes' to someone just for the sake of it.

Secondly, Gibbs-White. I'm probably in a minority here, but I'd sell him. We're going to spend £25m to buy a player to do what he could/should have done.

I want us to have a real go at the cups too but we have to develop back ups. Kilman for me isn't far off the starting line up depending on what we do with Bennett an injury and he's likely playing/in contention.

Your not telling me early stages of the league cup in particular say we get someone like Northampton Town you wouldn't field players like Kilman to give them game time?

It’s a huge season for MGW, he needs to play and show he is going to be a big player, or he’ll be moved on. I really hope he takes the chance.

Ruben Vinagre will do well, I hope he gets the chance to be first choice LWB and we don’t buy someone for the short term.

Massive season for Diogo, he’s had a quiet year and has to do well in the upcoming season or he will be moved on like Cav/costa.

I’d loan Kilman out for the season, he needs games and won’t get many this year.

Looking forward to seeing whether Mathewson stays with us or goes on loan.

Also keen to see what happens with Nial Ennis

The person no-one seems to have mentioned is Jordao.

Hopefully he's been spending the last year watching and learning from Moutinho, and reports from U23 games have been positive. He also seems (admittedly, on very shaky evidence) to have moved ahead of MGW in the central midfielder pecking order.

I meant to include him in the initial post to be fair but missed it and the edit function on here is being an arse today so just left it.

Interesting one him not a lot to judge him on but certainly one to watch out for.

Didn't see him v Reading but by all accounts he did well before his injury. Saw him at Villa in the Cup and he was pretty good, even better when it turned out he wasn't actually fully fit.

Another one to watch is Shabani. genuinly think he would have been in the 1st team a lot last season and hopefully his recovery from the ACL is 100%

I reckon Jota is on his way. He has fallen behind Neto and Podence and I think it was telling he has fallen behind Traore when it is a front two.

Last season the thought of selling Jota would not have gone down well, if he leaves in the next few weeks I am not sure it would be too much of an issue.

It always baffles me how quick people are to right Jota off. Genuinely.

Before lockdown he had just hit a purple patch, was fantastic against Spurs and no one would have entertained that thought. I think Nuno knows his quality too, and would never give up on him. The break comes at a good time for him, two weeks off to come back refreshed and hopefully with that edge to his game back. When he has that he is our best player.

Its an easy jump to make. His season has been patchy at best really and bar Everton, he hasn't been fully on it since the return. The majority of his performances in recent weeks have matched or fallen below what we got from Helda and Ivan, so can see where people are coming from.

Jota has had some great spells for us but has always lacked consistency over a full season [he's young so I recognise why]. Much better when he plays 'on the edge' or even beyond it, getting close to defenders and rolling them with his low centre of gravity. I liked it when he got a kick early and the red mist came down a bit.

I'm a fan, but he hasn't been worth a place in the team for some time now. Even at his best, I don't think he's ever been our 'best player' though.

Selling him is not an easy jump to make :icon_lol: 16 goals and 8 assists! I know helped by europe but for someone that hasn't played consistently at the levels we know he is capable of that isn't bad at all

Youngwolf meet expectant Football fans linked to Wolves...

Its a very easy jump to make if you are currently producing the same as players recently bombed out of the club. I don't think we will nor we should but I can see where people who think we will are coming from, hence I put in my review that he *may* be an exit.

I think the way he plays tiredness will hit him harder than certain other players. Add in indifferent form at times and a knock early season it adds up.

His performances have dipped to Cav/Costa levels but largely they were consistently poor, but neither of those players score hatricks, the goal v Everton etc

He'll come back strong. It's more Wolves fans contradictions, agonising about depth and then oh well, we've got Neto and Podence, cya later Diogo.

He's not produced the same as Cav or Costa though? They would come on, barely contribute anything (maybe slightly harsh on Cav) whereas Jota's issue has been finishing opportunites as he's still been getting in pretty decent positions. He's not had that sharpness so his general performance has been below what we'd expect for him, but it's still nothing like those two IMO.

Going to sound like I am having a pop at him but I am not. His contributions have been poor, bar say his Everton performance. I would say he is matching what Costa would do and that is help out defensively but when i comes to attacking, bar a few moments, its not that great since restart. As I said I wouldn't sell him but if you look a recent contributions, its easy to see why some think he will be.

I just don't see where MGW fits into Nuno's current formations unfortunately and he doesn't seem, anymore, to trust him to come on and change the game.

Very sadly it might be time for him to move onward - possibly the most (only) disappointing thing to come out of Nuno's time is that we haven't had any homegrown players progress to be starters.
