The players to come good 2020/21 season thread

It isn’t really. Nobody comes near our Raul valuation at 29. He is guaranteed his starting position here. And our valuation on Traore is outlandish too. My only concern is really Neves and he seems incredibly settled.

My concern is Neves too, he’s fantastic - and deserves to be playing for a top champions league team. I hope we can keep him this season.

Only way someone goes is if our monster valuation is met or the player really agitates for a move.

Probably just the way it’s worded, but I think we’ll sell a couple - Bennett obviously, but it wouldn’t be a shock for Donk to go if we sign a couple of midfielders for example, or Saiss if we signed a couple of centre backs.

We won’t have wholesale changes, but Nuno will keep the squad fresh and that means a couple of departures as well as incomings (imo)

He's not produced the same as Cav or Costa though? They would come on, barely contribute anything (maybe slightly harsh on Cav) whereas Jota's issue has been finishing opportunites as he's still been getting in pretty decent positions. He's not had that sharpness so his general performance has been below what we'd expect for him, but it's still nothing like those two IMO.

Very harsh on Cav! I still like Ivan much more than Jota, but that ship has sailed, obviously.

Jota's problem very much isn't end product. It's what he contributes when you take those goals away. Which is, frankly, not very much, in my opinion.

IMO, we are in dire need of a forward who helps retain possession, who isn't afraid to pass backward now and again. Jota is the opposite of that, so much so that when he isn't in a purple patch, I think he actively detracts from the team.

The bit in bold is nuts mate! Jota is on a completely different level, as was proved last season.

Even when he plays badly, or the team plays badly, he is the one to create. The only real openings we had against Sheffield United, Arsenal and Chelsea for example all came through him.

Got to agree with YW Alan. I literally wanted to call my youngest son Ivan, but he's not on Jota's level

I've felt that way for going on three years now, really. Shouldn't come as a surprise.

I'm under no delusion of thinking I'm not in a minority (of one!) with that opinion. :icon_lol:

Take each player at their worst and Jota would add more to the team than Cav.

Loved Cav but he had some shockers. Probably the best finisher out of our forwards at the time but when he wasn't on it he would stink the place out (c) Match Day Threads 2019-20. There is a reason why Nuno let him go. I don't think Cav could ever hit the form, over an extended period like Jota does.

Didn't mean to make the conversation about Cav; as I say, that ship was very much sailed.

I'd love to see what would happen to Louie if Jota and Stones ever end up playing against one another.

Jota can definitely be wasteful at times, particularly so when he isn't playing particularly well as it seems at times like he tried too hard to force himself back into form rather than just keeping it sensible and letting things develop. He's not the only one though, I mentioned it last night with Jimenez and some of his little flicks and blind passes, I generally love that type of interplay but when your team is under the cosh and possession is at a premium you just have to put a foot on it for a second. It's perhaps a side effect of the largely counter attacking nature of this team, their most threatening moments tend to come from playing things quickly and taking those risks to force the issue but sometimes you have to approach things differently, that's what this team needs to learn to develop now they're no longer the underdog more often than not.

You never know, he may come good for Flum next season

As the last thing I'll say before relinquishing my hijack, I think their body languages have a lot to do with it. Cav is very languid, Jota absolutely the opposite. When Cav fucks up, it looks like he barely cares. Jota could run down the blindest of dumb blind alleys, but you certainly can never say he doesn't look like he's working his balls off.

People like to see the obvious effort. Which is totally understandable.

Don't think anyone ever really accused Cav of not caring.

Not specifically, but it makes his bad days look and feel worse than Jota's. That's my take, anyway.

Someone might need to confirm the numbers but Jota last season got 11 yellows. This season I think it is about 4. Apart from occasional flashes there's been something missing this year (19/20).

Tim Spiers said that he 'wasn't a team player'. Idiot.

Well he got sent off for losing his shit. I don't think his aggression is an issue. It might be he isn't being chopped down every 5 seconds as the attention is on Adama. Jota's discipline goes when he feels he is being targeted.

For me Podence could be an absolute gem at unlocking some of those obdurate defences that we have trouble with. The Brighton's Burnley's Sheffield's of the division.

It's a big season for Moutinho. Does he have the legs for another marathon? If not who backs him up.? Nuno says today we need more players in the squad. I would add the word quality to that. We have not had squad depth under Nuno.

MGW needs to step up quick or be replaced. Harsh but he is not progressing like Foden or others of that I'll. He did not have a good game this season that I can remember even if his time was limited.

Jota had a shocker post lockdown but he has shown he is prone to periods of hot and cold. I hope we see him return. Raul would be daft to move yet. Traore is a different story. He could move on.

Doherty and Raul back up please plus a different cm to give us something we haven't got. All three should be of starting quality so 50m could be spent. That's why we sell Traore to fund it.

I would say he isn't so much talking about increasing the numbers but saying exactly what the majority are saying - We need more options and strength/quality to choose from. Currently we don't have a good enough option for midfield, RWB, CF & CB. chuck in LWB as well now.

So its all about replacing the likes of Bennett, having an actual option for replacing Raul and upgrading on using the likes of Buur as a sub for example.

He also speaks about avoiding the mistakes we made last summer. Now that can be taken a couple of ways "You didn't give me good enough options" or " We got it wrong with Jesus (ability to adapt) and Cutrone (character) and we need to do our homework better this time around"

What marathon? We don’t have Europe so 38 League games and the odd Cup game if needed, he stays fresh...

My worry not specifically about Moutinho but generally is that physically it will feel like the same marathon
