The R.I.P. Thread

Whatever you think of the Royals then he used his position to do some good things - know a number of younger people who went through the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme and it made them & gave them a real purpose in life.

This is not to do with a monbarchy v a republic

I’m going to hazard a guess and say he didn’t do much organising for the DoE scheme.

An old lady has lost her life partner. After nearly eighty years. She must be bereft. That’s all I can say.

Who is forcing you all to consume all this coverage that find too much?
It's about the sort of society we have and the sort we might want. The level of coverage is quite separate from whether I'm being forced to watch it or not. His face was plastered all over advertising screens at roadsides today. It's incredibly weird.

Apart from organising it, getting it up and running, deciding what sort of things went into it, getting organisations involved at the start, you're right he had very little to do with it

Do people under 60 still see the Royals in the way described above? As an institution they still have support in the high 70s % wise, but I don't think that's really in a servile way for the younger generations, more that they think it's a British institution they are proud of. Perhaps I'm wrong?

Why do you find it weird ? It's the monarchs husband, did you honestly think it would be just mentioned as a humorous footnote at the end of a news broadcast ? I know it's not 'your thing' but did you and Shaun Lawson thought the coverage would be any less, really?

I'm very happy for it to be a leading news item for a few days but no more than that. He was 99 ffs It's not like it was a shock. Instead we had rolling coverage on 4 of 5 channels for most of yesterday and still on BBC1. Of course. BBC Radio suddenly stopped broadcasting and replaced it with sombre music. On Monday MPs will spend about 5 hours talking about how brilliant he was. The 'lefty' 🤣🤣🤣 Guardian's website has a black background. That seems normal to you?

I usually quite like to read the paper and listen to music on 6 music on a weekend morning. Even 6 music is not 6 music today. It’s deeply weird, feel like I should be ritually mourning.

I'm not a royalist (not anti either) and I don't like celebrity culture, however I'm fine with a lot of coverage, he was an important national figure and meant a lot to a lot of people, they have gone ott though, don't understand why the same programmes were on bbc1 and 2. Was not showing entertainment shows meant to be a mark of respect? If so it was too much imo. I think the man himself would have been a bit embarrased and wanted people to get the fuck on with their lives..........and before Paul jumps on me I didn't watch any of it and found other things to do, was just surprised by the amount really

It’s still going on now. Completely excessive.
BBC have no choice in this. They are simply following the rules set out.

I'm no Royal fan, they don't make me happy or sad and I have no real opinion on the good/bad they bring. However I get the coverage and know I have Netflix, Prime, Sports, Books etc to use. Not that I watch TV when it happens anyway.

When the Queen decides its time to move on, this coverage will feel tame. Plus the moment it's announced we actually start national mourning for a few days and part of that is businesses have to close at that point. No choice, shut down and go home.
