The Royals

So like... What are the actual arguments that get made over there for maintaining the royalty at all? My understanding is that they don't really have any political power these days outside of being able to cow elected politicians because of their lineage.

I.E., they can make other people do what they want but they don't have any actual power aside from social ostracization? So what keeps them around?

History, good for tourism, stops people like Boris Johnson being president of the U.K. That's about it tbh

Still about 75% approval I think, but 52% voted for Brexit... most will wrap it up as being an expression of Britishness and heritage. Outside of weddings I think the tourism argument is a red herring, it's not like we'd burn the palaces down if we got rid of them.

Personally I'd phase them out, William being the last king

FWIW the Royals will not be on my list of "things to see" on my trip over. Buckingham Palace, maybe. The people themselves? Really couldn't be less bothered.

They don't just mill about :D You wouldn't see them even if you tried.

I don't think I've ever seen a royal in the flesh in my life. Not that I've tried to seek them out.

When I was about 8, the Queen was touring the area and her helicopter landed in our school field. We were all lined up, waving our flags for her...

I'm no fan of the Royals, at all, but I'd keep them. It's harder for a dictator to take over and have military parades etc in their honour with a monarch as the ceremonial head of things like the armed forces.

Ive met and spoke to
Duke of Edinburgh, met him at St James palace when I got my gold duke of Edinburgh award, beforehand a lackey came in pointed and said " the duke will speak to you, you, you and you and then leave" the duke came in, spoke to everyone of us personally for about five minutes and told the lackey to bugger off when he came in pointing at his watch.
Prince Charles, visited the barracks at Lichfield during my basic training, he spoke briefly to the platoon I was in, he's quite short, with a big arse.

Seen,
Prince Edward, he visited the private school I used to take kids in a coach to, that was the same day I'd done a private hire to a wildlife park, and while in the tropical house,I leaned into the enclosure and poked a crocodile with a stick because I didn't think it was real, it was, and it was mightily pissed at being poked, Good job I moved quicker than he did.

The only real argument is tourism but you'd get more of them if you kicked the family out and let the people have full access to the palaces. Versailles gets shitloads of visitors.

The English are quite a conservative bunch and I think a monarch is reassuring. And the media lick their arses so people never hear how dodgy they are.

Pretty easy to get in to Buck House these days isn't it?
I'm largely ambiguous about them, they seem to give a lot of people pleasure for some reason, I think they'll gradually become more irrelevant as my generation die out.

The moment he claimed to never have met her rather than accept he had and it was all consensual was effectively the moment he ceased to be a functioning Royal. He hasn’t got a leg to stand on and will settle and it won’t be cheap. Nobody will believe his protestations that it was only to get it sorted so he could get on with a normal life, with the possible exception of Rees-Mogg who apparently will believe any old shit if it comes from someone who attended a public school. The only time(s) he’ll be seen in public again will be at his Mum’s funeral and possibly his brother’s Coronation.

If her lawyer is to be believed she’s more interested in him admitting liability rather than settling out of court whilst he denies any wrongdoing.

I do hope she does but the vast majority of such cases end with an out of court settlement and prior to any agreement such statements are standard.
Precisely. They want him taken down.
Job pretty much already done then. Unless he goes to court and clears his name, which seems inconceivable, he will be viewed as guilty and forced to hide away for the remainder of his days.
