The Rugby Thread

Only one game in and already plenty has happened for the Lions . All 7 Irish players were selected to play for the Lions against Japan on Saturday - not sure why Gatland went down that road ( Furlong was originally selected on the bench , but later named to cover an injury to Ferguson ) .
Alun Wyn Jones and Justin Tipuric both picked up injuries in the match that ended their tour . It's a huge amount of experience to lose at the beginning of the tour , especially Jones who has been a tower house for Wales over the years . Andrew Porter had withdrawn a few weeks ago , so three players are already gone .
The good news for Ireland is that Conor Murray has now been appointed captain - an amazing turnaround for him when you consider how his form dipped so badly since mid 2018 with lots of people questioning him . This could well be the making of him , who knows . Gatland would not have chosen him if he didn't think he was ready .

Meanwhile Covid in South Africa is far from over with three positive tests in the South African squad . The tour marches on nonetheless .
It's a bit like the Olympics - everyone says that it shouldn't go ahead , but it's still going ahead .

Saturday's match was a good game for a number of the Irish players as well , all of which bodes well .

Two Welsh players have been called up to replace the in injured Jones and Tipuric ( Beard and Navidi ) . James Ryan was not considered due to a groin injury - he's better off two , take the Summer off and recover .

Japan well up on Ireland already. They really are superb to watch.

Try chalked off for a forward pass. Not sure about that one.
But Japan are very lively.

Borderline, shame really as it was a lovely move.

Had to stop watching at that point, shame as it seems I missed a cracker.

Lions tour must be close to being binned. Georgia team, Springboks, and also the Bulls riddled with positive tests.

Should have switched it to England when they had the chance.

I think they will fight tooth and nail to get it to go ahead. Rugbys finances are on a bit of a tightrope at the moment, can't imagine the inevitable loss of revenue would be in anyone's interests

The Lions go on tour though, that’s what they do. Either play it in SA, or don’t play it at all.

Yes that is what they do, but they also generate large amounts of revenue that is desperately needed in the game.

To secure that what still having a competition not riddled with coronovirus it would have made sense to hold it in the UK, plus it would have been an ace quiz question in 20 years time.

Its perhaps more needed in SA

Sat down to kill an hour watching the Lions expecting boring one sided affair.

8 tries & 26 all at half time.

Nigel Owens. Now that’s how you involve an ex referee in comms. Watch and learn Matterface and Walton.
Warburton, particularly, but Greenwood too - pointing out the subtleties that some of us don’t always pick up, and real tactical insight.

The interaction between Owens and Greenwood and Warburton helped engage the viewer in the decision making processes that Wayne Barnes was going through without ever being judgemental on the man in the middle or indeed sycophantically backing his every move. It was a joy to listen to, and also hugely informative.

Is it time to start predicting the test XV. Good luck with working out the wingers and centres. Everyone has put their hand up for inclusion.

Im assuming full back will be a straight Hogg v Liam Williams fight.

Lions team to face South Africa: Hogg; A Watson, Daly, Henshaw, Van Der Merwe; Biggar, Price; W Jones, Cowan-Dickie, Furlong, Itoje, AW Jones (capt), Lawes, Curry, Conan.

Replacements: Owens, Sutherland, Sinckler, Beirne, H Watson, Murray, Farrell, L Williams.

Decent team, he's gone with form which I didn't expect.

Only slight surprise for me was no Josh Adams but I am more than happy with Watson on the wing.
