The Tennis Thread

Australians overseas were kept out of the country. Cross-state travel within Oz was severely curtailed. Lockdowns were frequent and punishing. People were kept away from dying relatives, from loved ones’ funerals, from family and friends. ‘We suffered all of that and yet Djokovic can waltz into the country and play tennis?’, some are saying.

But this is the wrong way to look at it. It isn’t Djokovic’s mythical flouting of the rules that is the problem – it is the rules themselves. Some seem to be bitter about the fact that they allowed themselves to be ground down by officialdom for close to two years, and they’re taking it out on Djokovic. But isn’t that on you, not Novak? A little less Djokovic-hate and a little more self-reflection is the prescription Australia needs right now.

He should probably be let in because of his exemption due to having Covid. However...

Holding a tournament in the height of the pandemic and then the players catching it

Refusing to have a vaccination

Post his December 16th diagnosis going out and attending events including those with kids

Makes him an absolute shit stain of a man

What did you do apart from bitch about it on the Internet?

I'm no fan of him but the politicalisation of Novak Djokovic by the Federal government is a disgrace and an international embarrassment.

Rather than pick a long overdue fight with the state Premiers over their obscene tyranny, it has decided to pick a fight with a person who committed the so called crime of being unvaccinated.

The irony of all this is that the Federal government has never wanted to defend the constitution or the right to refuse a vaccine but was more than willing to defend a stupid rule that healthy people, free from Covid can’t enter Australia.

It’s also worth nothing that the ATAGI guidelines clearly state if a person have had Covid in the last six months that person is entitled to an exemption from the vaccine.

So just to be clear I’m not in favour of special treatment for the rich but rather that the draconian rules that are in place be lifted for all Australians.

This will do incredible damage to international tourism at a time when small business and working families need all the help they can get.

It’s time the vilification of the unvaccinated stopped, mandates were lifted and our civil liberties returned !

Nah, vilify him. He’s a complete arse.

I'm not sure if it's in jest as you can never can quite tell on a post.

So in you opinion, justice and the rule of law should be dependent on whether you like or dislike a person ?

I've been angry about it all since late 2020 when one of my best friends died from a very aggressive form of bowel cancer - he wasn’t even 60.

What compounded the situation is that he was denied access to cancer screening for 6 months due to the State Govt’s denial of hospital visits for any such requirements during the height of the COVID lockdown restrictions.

Been on weekly protest marches last year (seen others pepper sprayed and fired on with rubber bullets), written to local MPs . . . any other suggestions ?

Being Australia's version of Piers Corbyn isn't anything to be proud of. I saw your pepper spray propaganda video last year showing one angle to give a unbalanced view of what happened.

I'm puzzled as to why the need for insults ?

As for the Corbyn reference, I'm not sure if you're trying to needle my Jewish background, I don't know.

Still as Harry Callahan would say "Opinions are like assholes. Everyone has one".

Fuck right off with that

And some stink more than others

In fairness to the bloke, there's a huge difference in being opposed to certain restrictions and handling of the virus and being a complete crackpot peddling ridiculous theories like the person you compared him to, I'd be pissed off about it if it was me labelled like that.

I wonder the thousands of NHS staff that are turning out in city centres across the country to protest against mandatory vaccines are going to be labelled the same way a lot of people attending those freedom marches are?

They're fucking arseholes and should be sacked. They're literally putting vulnerable people at risk for a bunch of unsubstantiated guff.

How though? Having the vaccine is a personal choice for protection of the user. There allegedly* has been more data to show that the current vaccines offer little in the way of transmission prevention. It does offer protection from infection itself but if they test positive they won't be there to spread it anyway.

* Im not especially au fait with reading these sorts of reports so I can't actually be sure of what's gospel.

Most of them are qualified enough to walk into decent paid private sector roles where they'll probably get a better work experience and the end loser is the service users themselves who have more appointments cancelled and longer wait times. Not that it particularly affects me either way but not everyone has that luxury.

The Lancet is an odd publication, mostly discredited for publishing the autism nonsense years ago.

Full fact has a link with resources here

The upshot is that vaccines do reduce transmission as well as voracity of the virus.

Based on that you would expect employees of the HEALTH service to look after their patients by having a vaccine as they do already for other conditions (hep C, etc).

But you're quote right, it's personal choice, it's also the right of your employer to impose reasonable expectations on the employee and if you (not you personally) don't abide by them then expect your employment to cease. It isn't your right to be employed and tough fucking shit if your decision has caused others to fuck you off. Go and march all you want you aren't the centre of the universe.

There depends on your idea of reasonable, I don't think it's reasonable to expect someone to put something in their body that they don't want to in order to keep their hugely underpaid and overworked jobs. I've told my wife 100s of times she should fuck off from the NHS and go into the private sector where her wages and work life would be infinitely better and finally she's decided to do so, taking with her 12 years experience in a field that her trust finds ridiculously hard to recruit (been recruiting for a second speech therapist with her specialisms for nearly 18 months, 3 applications total)

There isn't a vaccine for hep C is there? Hep B is advised not mandatory, as is the flu jab.

I agree the marching isn't going to get what they want. If they had any sense they would just all book shifts then unanimously not turn up to them for the first hour. I'm pretty sure that would get the point across effectively. Realistically though, I imagine the government will climb down as a fully qualified and experienced nurse is not replaceable like a minimum wage care worker, not to mention the cost when they see how few people are taking nursing degrees now they have to pay and have to subsidise it fully again.

What if they get a false negative and actually have Covid?
Would you be happy with them on a ward with an elderly relative of yours, infecting them?

Happy, no but only cuz they are in hospital. They are likely to get it anyway we the testing in and segregation in hospitals is a joke regardless of if the member of staff treating them has it so that would have zero baring for me. I'd rather there be someone treating them than no one and that's the alternative as we can't just magic them out of thin air.
