The Transfer Thread 2022/23- Everything not Wolves

Transfer fees are largely irrelevant if the player succeeds. They don’t lose any value and you get a good player.

If he gives 8 years plus service and leaves on a free then it was good investment. If he does well and you sell him after 5 years you’re probably at least getting your money back ignoring inflation.

When transfer fees become a problem is when you sign someone for a decent amount who then becomes effectively worthless. See Cutrone, Patrick.

We've had loan fees for him, so not a total waste...

Depends how much they were and how much wage contribution. Stuff we will never know the answer to.
I think the first was a fair chunk and then they paid not to sign him (like we have done with Jose...money well wasted)and Jorge got us another fee from Valencia.
We are still a lot down on him, ignoring wages, probably around the £10m mark.

He is back this preseason and I am interested to see what Lage does with him. I actually think he can get the best out of him but we will probably use him as bait for other signings.

I always found it odd that we always paired him with Raul. I thought it was one or the other, he might have done better alongside Jota in our 3-5-2.

I think you’re being a little optimistic to think we’ve made £6m back!

Loan fees are designed so the selling club get some money in for the privilege of letting you “try before you buy” and then obviously insurance if they decline . Raul we paid €5m for and then €35m for after. So 12.5% up front. It’s never really going to be more than 20% as a standard. So best case I reckon we were getting £4m (top end) in loan fee and a decent wage contribution (he would be there second highest earner).

His second loan fee would have been negligible. We we’re in the territory then of get him off the books as best we can. It’s either loan fee and little wage contribution or vice versa. There’s no way they are paying all his £60k p/w making him their 5th highest earner and then giving us cash as well.

When Jorge is involved...

Don't forget the first loan was for 18 months with an obligation to buy for £16m (minus loan fee) That wouldn't have been cheap and then they paid to have the obligation removed. Valencia are on the Mendes money cycle so easy to come to a decent figure for him in terms of fees. Obviously I'm plucking figures out of thin air but when Jorge is involved anything is possible.

Not cheap is £4m quid max. Hefty chunk of money there. There no evidence they paid to not activate the clause. That isn’t a thing. There was rumours they weren’t playing him so the clause wasn’t activated. So what’s the truth…

Basically it was a dreadful transfer, we’re going to make a massive loss. Suggesting it won’t be that bad is too many years of Moxey.

Grealish to City very close apparently

£100m!

Fair play to Villa on that front. Summer spending sorted without putting their hand in their pocket

I know it's against the law for Wolves fans to like Grealish, but tbh I bloody love the bloke. The way he plays, the cockiness, the impact - not so much on the drink driving, obvs - but I think he's wicked tbh. £100m is a lot of bloody money though, and it won't reflect well if he goes for that, and Neves goes for sub-£40m

He's a good footballer and the way he spoke earlier this week about his brother who had passed away and his sister means that if he does leave Villa then I can appreciate his skills a bit more.

Nice way for City to hyper inflate the market again.
