Very much doubt Bruno will change the system, and he's got his hands tied to a degree. If Joao is available, he'll come in for Donk and I imagine Bruno will put RAN back in for Marcal. It'll be a slight improvement on last night given we're starting with two better players, but the outcome of the game will be similar; either a close 1-0 win/defeat.

Assuming Moutinho is fit, I'd personally go with:

Sa
Kilman-Coady-Saiss
Semedo-Moutinho-Neves-RAN
Podence
Raul-Hwang

Can't see him playing that, the extra man in midfield would be Donck. Anything without Podence or Trincao please

I haven't really got any time for Podence on current form. Also it looks from the heights of the North Bank Upper like he's developing a bald patch, very distracting as it makes him look like Sid Cowans circa 1995.

This won't happen but:

-------------------------------Sa---------------------

------------------Kilman-----Coady----Toti---------

Semedo-------Saiss--------Neves-----Moutinho-----RAN

--------------------Raul----------Hwang-------------------

2021/22: L 0-1 (H), D 2-2 (H, LC, lost on pens)
2020/21: D 1-1 (H), L 0-2 (A)
2019/20: L 1-2 (H), W 3-2 (A)
2018/19: L 2-3 (H), W 3-1 (A)
2011/12: L 0-2 (H), D 1-1 (A)
2010/11: D 3-3 (H), L 1-3 (A)
2009/10: W 1-0 (H), W 1-0 (A)
2003/4: L 0-2 (H), L 2-5 (A)
1995/6: D 1-1 (A, FAC), L 0-2 (H, FAC)

Podence wouldn't be an extra man in midfield. He would link the middle two with the front two and could also drift in to wider areas. We had a fluid front three for a little while earlier in the season where they all interchanged to different positions, but it seems to have been abandoned. As for Podence, I feel he looks more threatening when he drifts in to the middle and plays those little passes in and around the edge of the box. Basically, if we can get a player or two closer or running off Raul, I think we'll create more.

Hwang been having back spasms so that might rule him out a start.

Presuming they’ll train today and then travel down tomorrow so won’t have much time to work on anything.

Saiss in midfield says Deutsch . Can I applaud that please . I have said here more than once , but got shot down . We need something different .
Jiminez's form is a real concern as the alternative options in terms of goal scoring are simply not there . Podence has a habit of not getting us out of a hole when times are tough .

I had very little confidence about last night beforehand and stated as much . Couldn't understand the confidence of other posters - we simply do not score enough . That means that if the opposition score first , our chances of winning are slim .

Wouldn't rule out a surprisingly good performance against Spurs though .

I'd love that, there was a moment in the second half where Saiss nipped in to a tackle and pushed down the left wing, it came to nothing (poor Podence decision as ever), but it was drive and "umph" that we really miss at times in CM that i feel Saiss could give us, and certainly not something that Donk ever does.

(i recognise the absolute insanity that this is even being discussed, but here we are - ay Jeff/Scott)

There's a time I would have said Saiss in midfield was a retrograde step, but I'd have more faith in him making the most of any forward forays and headed chances that came his way than Donk (who didn't even get any of his three or four chances on target yesterday IIRC)

How many years is it since Saiss last played in midfield for us (or anyone?). Got to be at least 3.

Yeah, pretty much since start of 19/20 where he was playing in the middle of the three being rotated with Ruben. We then moved him into the back three and our form picked up very quickly tbf.

Dan's team for me.

Saiss back at CM. How I dream of that day.

I think he came on in CM a few times in the early part of 2019/20. Hasn't started there for aaaaaages though.

I'd rather not do it, I just think it's our best option for now as the wide players are playing like shit so we're as well doing away with them, and Toti at CH + Saiss in midfield >>>> Saiss at CH + Donck in midfield.

Let's face it, anyone for Donk in midfield is an improvement! Got to keep Podence in the team, as he's the only player who is capable of something unpredictability special. I'd like to see Chiquinho given a start too, cos Trincao's useless. Sa, Kilman, Coady, Saiss or Toti, Semedo, Neves, Moutinho or Saiss, RAN, Chiquinho, Raul, Podence.

Is there a single attribute Donck has that he’s better than Saiss at? No.

That is tragic as one we picked up for peanuts and is likely to leave on a free in the summer. The other we paid a decent wedge for and have since given a long contract on stupid money, who possibly may be our only senior CM at the club.
