But where is the "well regulated" bit? I assume this should mean something along the lines of the TA (but independent of the gov)?

It's a nonsense anomaly from a document written 36 years before the battle of Waterloo (I'm sure Alan will correct me on that exact gap).

Like expecting the US constitution to deal with air travel really.

From 2 minutes of googling, any private militia's are illegal. Militia's have to be formed by the government (the 'well regulated' bit). I think it basically enshrines the govts ability to put civilians into militia's. Those militia's would be extensions of the armed forces.

But it's late, I'm tired and easily confused.

But the US SC has just ruled expanding gun rights based on it? I totally get it's an anachronism, but in this country (which is obviously far from perfect) laws supersede what has gone before (like being able to kill a Welsh man with a long bow outside the city gates after midnight, or eating mince pies at Christmas. Never repealed, but not enforceable).

Tom Scott did a video on laws that have never been repealed, was stuff like cleaning a carpet after 8pm, or firing a cannon at someone, worth a look, his videos are always entertaining

Almost as if basing your modern government on a 250 year old document that couldn't possibly have conceived of life in 2022 is a bad idea

You cannot apply the same rules to a Puckle gun and an AR-15.

The 2nd amendment allows firearms in a "well regulated militia" - how did protection of that amendment come to mean "absolutely no regulation of guns period"?

In recent surveys most of those who support the right to have unrestricted access to guns want them so should they deem it necessary they can fight their own Government rather than an invading army.

Yes, Americans 'fear' their own government more than any foreign invader.

The Supreme Court decision today was very much a political/ideological one. 6 conservative judges voted one way, 3 liberals the other way.

Somehow it always seems to transpire that judges only die when there is a Republican President and/or Senate.

As Steve Hofsetter the comedian says of the people who need guns to fight the government “ they don’t know how tanks work” plus the government has better armed and trained people

And yet when their was an actual insurrection, 95% of it was a few broken windows and selfies in big chairs. Americans are fucking bellends

The Welsh man with a long bow is over the country border and has long been effectively repealed as it would now be considered murder rather than patriotism 😀

Yes, effectively, but, not specifically, repealed (mores the pity..?😉). It's an anachronism as much as the 2nd ammendment is. So given that there are no(?) well regulated militia (and if there are most people won't be part of one), there shouldn't be the carte blanche right to bear arms? No?

Most gun owners would likely fall back on a "right to self-defense" argument.

But they'll quote the 2A? Which doesn't mention self defence, but "well regulated militia"?

I’m always surprised the US doesn’t amend the amendment, it’s been changed before ( the clues in the word amendment) again as Steve Hofsetter says “ defend the second amendment if you defend all the others equally, or even know what they are”

It feels mental even asking this, but do you know what it would cost to buy an AR-15? Even if its just a ballpark figure.

I'm expecting it to be cheaper than say, insulin.
