WBA 1-1 Wolves: Verdict Thread

or sitting further forward and dictating play?
That's how I'd have him too. Far better in that role, means he can get forward when he learns to shoot again.

He'd be top class in Leicester's 3 man n midfield (I'd like to see us play that way).

I think Donk is fine for now, but if we could get someone like Anguissa from Fulham next to Neves I think our midfield would look a lot more dynamic

Presumably if he's further forward then he'll need to be able to shoot.

At the minute he's worse than Guedioura from range.
He is also joint top scorer. Not every goal needs to be a 30 yard worldie.

I'm not saying his long range shooting shouldn't be better.

For reference, he has two whole goals that weren't penalties this season.

It's not like he's turned himself into a slim Kevin Nolan or anything, it's just that he's there rather than Raul to take them.

I've been surprised at how Neves performance against the Baggies has been generally viewed on here.
I thought he ran the show for us and allowed Vitinha to do his stuff, which he did really well. His best game in a Wolves shirt IMO.

I agree Neves shooting has been disappointing for some time and that's quite puzzling for me. I know there are better defences and goalkeepers in the Premier, but even when he has the space and time, he is blasting the majority of his shots high and wide into the stands. Frustrating.

When you look at the average positions vs Albion, it's genuinely a bitmad that we set up so RAN was so exposed - but it honestly never felt like it in how he defended, and they didn't particularly target that disconnect

Got in behind him in the 2nd half but their crossing from that side was a bag of shit (summed up by the cross from their free kick late on)

Would Traore's average position have been distorted by him switching flanks part way through the game?

Good point that. But I'd also think it makes more sense for us to have our deeper midfielder on the side of our more advanced (and far less experienced) fullback

It's hard to judge much from these graphics in isolation without some context. Coady is the deepest outfield player, is he dragging back Semedo and Dendoncker as they come to offer passing options rather than them sitting deep to offer protection?

Semedo lead our touches

Semedo 89
Neves 88
Vitinha 84
Ait 68

Traore had one of our highest pass completitions too, 51 touches, 85.7 percent completion, 3 key passes, 3 aereal duels won (3rd for Wolves)

Traore is definitely improving in the air, he's always had one hell of a leap on him, but he is started to actually direct where it goes now :)

I was a little surprised Semedo got a bad write up from a few people after the game.

I don't think he'll ever be a defensive powerhouse, but I thought he got forward and involved well on Monday. Good interplay with some of the young lads too

Yeah I am continually surprised with the hate he gets, I think that is his 4th or 5th game in a row where he has led our most touches list. Like you say he isn't a rock, but he is incredibly dynamic, like a possession based low end version of Cafu, in the sense he truly contributes to both ends of the game.

He was fine against Albion, he could possibly have taken a little more responsibility on their goal by anticipating what was happening and closing down quicker, but it wasn't a major mistake, he was left exposed. It's been a few games since he made a horrendous error (and there have been several this season) that's for sure.

He's unlucky not to have scored this season, he's had several really good efforts/chances, where the keeper has either pulled off a great save (Areola) or he hasn't quite been composed enough after a great run (Albion)

Most touches, and high numbers of interceptions and tackles are not good indicators of good full back play, his numbers in that regard are high through a combination of teams targeting him and sometimes leaving him isolated.

I think the issue with Semedo is, people just remember the one cock up, because usually it leads to us conceding or giving up a very good chance. So he can play well for 95% of the match but then the 5% where he does something stupid which costs us goals/points is the bit people remember. Understandably, I guess. But I would say he has definitely improved as the season has progressed.

Appreciate Wop's Lowton/Baldock comment is now TWF joke of the week, but I wouldn't be adverse to having one of them as Semedo's back up - thus saving a shit load of wages/money to spend elsewhere - and having a solid go to option if required. If they were called Lowtoninho and Baldockeira people would be more accepting ;)
