Welcome Hwang Hee-Chan

So almost all Koreans have a one syllable surname followed by a two syllable first name:

손 (Son) 흥민 (Heung-min)
박 (Park) 지성 (Ji-sung)
설 (Seol) 기현 (Ki-hyeon)
황 (Hwang) 희찬 (Hee-chan)

I'm not sure why the Romanization puts that hyphen between the first and second syllable of Korean first names. It causes all sorts of confusion when coupled with the fact the surname comes first in Korea.
Can your mrs give you the phone/laptop back now please?

It's not about some evil racism. It's about total ignorance.

I used to laugh when Mike Channon couldn't pronounce Lineker but nonetheless thanks for the deep analysis.

Any relation to Mick Channon? ;)

Hwang, Wang, Huang, even Wee. It's all the same

Three announcements for the price of one by the time we get to the summer.

Welcome aboard Hwang. It’s nice that he’s come in to the group and has settled in and seems well liked by the other players. Like I say, in terms of the transfer fee outlay and the wages he’s on, it’s a bit of a no-brainer in terms of adding a perfectly good squad option to the group. I don’t think he gets in our best 11 with all players fit, but he’s a more than suitable option on the bench or when rotation is required.

I’m just a bit perplexed by the timing of it, and why we’ve rushed it through and announced it now. Would we really be losing anything by letting him have the second half of the season to see how he progresses, how he comes back from his injury and what the other squad options are looking like come the end of the season. We’d also know by then whether we have European football or not next year.

I’m pleased for him - he seems a good lad. It’s just odd timing for me.

I guess my issue other than the timing is this. We have spoken for so long about how weak our bench is and that the preference would be to sign players for the first 11 and those who are currently in it drop down. This feels like signing a player for the bench, be it a versatile option. I mean it's fine and the value is alright, it's just not a signing which moves us forwards

Remember when we didn't sign Boly until the last minute and the flapping then...

Timing of it is fine. It was clear we were going to sign him. Bruno spent December saying he wanted to sign him, so on that basis we were going to sign him regardless of what happens Jan-May it makes no real difference does it.

My guess and that is all it is so don't expect a detailed response challenging it apart from the Partridge shoulder shrug - The loan had a point in it where we could say thanks but no thanks and pay something (like we did with Jose) or take up the option with a built in reduction in fee if we say now we will make it permanent in the summer.
Another theory is some other clubs were (apparently) sniffing around before his injury and regardless of agreements in place they can easily be broken if the selling clubs thinks it can earn more. So ends that possibility....worse case scenario, we Afobe him.

Also Hwang may hate his song and begged them to announce what was happening so it could go for a rewrite...

Speculation again but maybe the fee was dependent on some performance related factors, number of goals for example.

Worst case is that he carries on being as wank as he has been since Newcastle, and he ends up on loan for four years until his contract is up. That doesn't seem altogether improbable, either.

He looked fine for a bit, then he didn't. Personally, I don't think I've seen enough of him yet to form a firm opinion one way or the other. Certainly not as much as Bruno, and if it adds to our squad/bench depth, it's OK by me.

Same for any player innit.

I will stand by my stance of I can't have a go at Jeff and Co for not backing Bruno when they sign him a player he wants and get it properly secured fairly early. We can all share our opinion on the player whether he is shit/good/bench filler etc but the one man that counts wanted him to stay and that is happening.

Obviously they need to step up the backing more and I hope this is the start of them giving Bruno the tools he feels he needs to progress the team and the playing style. (although I don't think we will do any incoming business in the next 5 days)

Mediocre player, good price, manager wants him. Nothing changes until the summer though

Aye, people talk about £15m getting you nothing...Jota, Neves, Neto, RAN, all for the same sort of money.
