Welcome to Wolves - Japan Moutinho

Ah fuck, I’m mid-sesh and I’m actually tearing up.

João is up there with Xabi Alonso in my pantheon of early favorites (in hindsight, it may be because they’re both dimes, but I digress), that mythical place in my heart as a player who I was lucky enough to watch early, and who watching helped me fall in love with the sport.

Everything he did exuded class, simultaneously professional, casual, and devious. To see a player like João at Wolves was something I’d long since filed away as an absolute impossibility. For it to actually have happened is something I still pinch myself over.

Thanks for five truly unbelievable years, João.

The weird timing makes me think he's about to either sign for someone, or retire.

Porto.

No idea why it's taken so long but it's a good signing for them. They've lost a lot of players in central midfield over the last few years but now they've got Nico González, Alan Varela, Grujic & Moutinho which is incredible for that level.

Probably (definitely) the best player I've seen in a Wolves shirt, and what a cracking attitude to boot. The timing is very odd, indeed.

Timing is...strange. Ignoring the salary or ego situations I'd have him on the bench now instead of Hodge. It was time for him to leave when he did, but the Summer hasn't been what anyone expected
Looks like he's had some time away with the family and is about to announce his next move, so out of respect, has said a goodbye to Wolves.

What a player, though. Absolute Rolls Royce. Loved watching him line up for the Old Gold for as long as he did and he leaves us all with some pretty special memories.

Loved everything about him. Never seen a player so good at judging when to press and when to drop. If he pressed he never over-committed and invariably got to make a tackle or interception. His ability to find space and have a fraction more time on the ball than other players was exceptional. Undoubtedly the best midfielder I have seen in 50 years watching Wolves and I’ll be very surprised if that ever changes. Thank you Joao, it was a pleasure and privilege to see you play for us.

A shame J Gomes didn't have longer to play with him

Pfft, Raul and Ruben did us a video, up your game Joao.

I jest of course. What a wonderful footballer. He made it look so, so easy - we had absolutely no right getting him when we did. A joy to watch

Getting to watch Joao Moutinho made suffering Atkins, Sedgley, Osborne, Dinning, Anderton, Potter, Evans and Saville worth it.

He was 5'7 but he was a giant. Thank-you Joao.

If you haven't experienced him waving at you before a corner have you really experienced what love is?

Might be getting ahead of myself but hard to see Gomes being here for 5 seasons.
It's probably too soon to judge, but comparing what we paid for him and what Chelsea have paid for Fernández, Caicedo and Lavia, we undoubtedly got the best deal. I don't see him as far off any of those 3 in ability. Consistency, maybe he's a bit behind, but he has equal talent.

You omitted the worst of the lot, Fatty Ferguson.

Fabulous player for us. Other than Ruben, probably the best to pull on the shirt that I saw in my supporting life.

As you say early days but he looks like he’s destined for great things.

It wasn't an exhaustive list tbf! I've missed out some absolute gash. I'll always be fond of Rae and Cameron but outside of that our midfield has always been wank for the most part.

To go from Edwards playing every minute of every game to Ruben Neves and Joao Moutinho inside 12 months is mental.

If only to pass on the witchcraft he used to perform which stopped refs from booking him even with 6/7 fouls per game.
Squeezing every inch he could when placing the ball for a free kick
