Welcome to Wolves Nelson Semedo

Semedo, is it tactical, is he being told not to attack the space behind his opposition fullback? Seemed really obvious yesterday that he was refusing to have a go, quite a few opportunities to do so. Seems odd to me, maybe one of the more tactically astute among you could enlighten me.

I'd presume it was tactical, but it wouldn't have made a difference given his pathetic lack of quality in the top third. Geezer is bang average. £35m ffs, we were proper mugged off

If it's tactical then it's poor design. You play this formation to create overloads wide as the wide forwards operate in the half space. Means we are attacking with just 3 players as neither midfielder is getting ahead of the ball.

Definitely tactical yesterday.

I just don't think he's good enough to be a wing back. He defended very well yesterday and kept the ball easily even when under pressure, but dribbling isn't his thing, he's just not very good at it.

He made a couple of runs higher up the pitch and wasn't found not that I think he's very good at crossing the ball.

He's a right back not a wing back.

The fact Lage (correctly imv) doesn't believe he has 2 centre halves who can play in a back 4 has a detrimental impact on the whole side. The full backs are both good defensively, but can't play wing back making us impotent out wide, we have to sacrifice an attacking option for another centre half whilst playing 2 none threatening in terms of goals centre midfielders. Jeff needs bulleting for it quite frankly

Personally not seen him go past players and try to cross or cut back enough to decide if he's technically good enough but it looks like he lacks self confidence or the coach doesn't trust him.
Disappointing if so, must admit I was expecting his main attribute when he came to be in attack.
Think he looks good defensively

Doc couldn’t dribble or cross, but when he was 1 v 1 he at least tried. It 99% of the time just spannered into defenders shins, but at least we won a corner or a throw. Whereas now we turn promising Positions into recycling the ball near the half way line.

Semedo defensively is really strong. So much better than I thought he’d be in that regard (and has even improved aerially).

Attacking wise it’s strange, technically he’s very good but he’s hesitant playing into the forwards feet at times and 1v1 he rarely tries to go round the outside of players. He does help us retain the ball pretty well under pressure though.

It's strange for us to play both Marcal & Semedo when we have RAN as an option.

As above, we need more in the final third from our wingbacks and RAN seems an obvious way of doing that

Both WBs barely crossed the half way line yesterday, let alone got into the final third. I think this was our way of making sure ASM didn't expose us, and along with smashing him a few times (most notably Coady after about 90 seconds on the halfway line) it almost entirely suffocated him.

I hope to see Semedo and RAN in coming games, and for them to be far more attacking than Marcal and Semedo were yesterday.

I think he's doing alright personally. He's had at least two chances in front of the keeper, links forwards well, and he's solid defensively.

If anything it's his finishing that's let him down.

I think his confidence after the recent misses Is shot to buggery, he will be back.

I agree. I quite like him. In an ideal world, he’d have a bit more composure in the final third, but he’s not really had a settled winger in front of him to form any sort of partnership. He’s better defensively than I expected when we signed him.

I've preferred this season's version of him compared to last season, he was making critical mistakes every other game last season (twatting the ball high up into the air on a couple of occasions and leading to goals for example), i can't remember him making an error so far this season?

I think I expected more 'swashbuckling' from him as an expensive player at his peak and coming in as a regular from an elite club, but he seems to play within himself a little.

Definitely our best option on that right side for me (not sold on Hoever), I'm hoping something clicks with him at some point and we get that little bit extra from him. Maybe will take a formation or personnel tweak to do it - I don't think this team is the finished article for Bruno this season

I wasn't intending to start a conversation criticising him, I like him, its just that in recent games and on Saturday in particular it seemed obvious that he wasn't prepared to take on his fullback at any time or try and put in any sort of cross/pass. My question was, is it down to Lage tactics or a reluctance by the player? My own thinking is it was something he'd been told not to do.....maybe because of ASM or other defensive concerns, whichever, it worked fine, Newcastle basically created 2 good chances, although it did feel we were lacking a bit going forward in wide positions.

Yeah i noticed the same on Saturday too, i definitely think this was down to instruction for this particular game, especially when you consider his chances v Southampton and Watford where he was going well into the final third. Neither he or Marcal went into the final third at all really on Saturday, and it worked, we were never really exposed.

I'd like to see him as a RB in a 4, but it'll probably be February by the time we see that - if we're lucky.

I think the last time Semedo tried to go out and just play his game, he got splattered five or six times by Alphonso Davies. That's got to leave a mental scar.

As long as he continues to be sound defensively and generally calm under pressure, I'll accept it. I think it's also worth noting that he has had upward of three wingers in front of him in a single match! Hard to develop a proper understanding with your flank partner when they're constantly being shifted around.
