West Ham 1-0 Wolves: Verdict Thread

I think our best player might have been Fabio.
Sa - good
Hoever awful looks a pub player
Killman had a poor game
Coady not his usual composed player
Saiss was ok
Neves was good
Dendonker was poor
Wang showed some glimpses
Fabio second half was superb, 1st half anonymous.
Trincaou useless
Agree with all of that

Fabio was superb? He took an extra touch on everything, hence Zouma blocking each attempt.

Hoever and Trincao were especially bad.

That said, the mentality of the whole team is dreadful and that has to come from the coaching. Zero urgency, defenders pss it between them until they aimlessly hit it up to a forward to compete with three defenders.

The amount of times we had the chance to go forward and attack and we’d stop and pass it all the way back to Sa/Coady was aggravating as hell.

I just want to enjoy watching us play because atm it’s a slog, even when we win.

Strange how people see it, his turn and left foot shot that left Dawson on his arae was excellent, he could not have got the shot off any quicker

Fabio was okay second half I thought, not good, not awful. He had four half chances but didn't manage to convert them into anything really dangerous.

Semedo a massive miss. Marcal and Hoever just not anywhere near good enough and we need the wing backs for our style of play.Trincao absolutely useless today.
No idea what Bruno wanted from this game. It wasn't a win for sure.
At least the media will shut the fuck up about 4th now. We'll be lucky to finish 9th or 10th. Southampton are not losing and they are 5 points off us.
Shit 2 games. Massive opportunity missed. Fucking pissed me off a lot.

Sa was ok *shrug* Fabio was lively 2nd half after we actually decided to attack...he was overmatched but he tried, which is unfortunately more than can be said for some. I'd be in favour of giving him a start without others around him handicapping him.

I don't care how many favours we owe Mendes, I'd sooner cut the cord than pay money for Trincao. If it means Barca can't afford to buy Adama then so be it, sell him somewhere else.

Hoever claiming he fancies himself going forwards, however long ago it was, is bad comedy.

Donck back to form. For a CM he seems to actively not want the ball far too often.

Reality is while we have a squad it is paper thin, outside the first XI there's only a couple who are legitimate options. Some of them were given a chance today and showed nothing, which makes me question the point of them being here.

There's still a reasonable shout of Europe if form picks back up but we seem to be going backwards again. I don't know if its the pressure & attention telling or what but we seem to have been actively shrinking in terms of mentality and performance - almost like they don't know what to do if they're not underdogs. That's going to be difficult to change without a big reshuffle.

-edit- I see this has been covered a bit already. Imposter syndrome is exactly what it is, thinking you're not good enough. Its a difficult mental issue which is not all that easy to deal with.

I do believe Bruno when he says he wants them to play braver, be more attacking, play with the ball more. He speaks frankly enough elsewhere, so there's no reason to think he's lying or exaggerating when he says that. But it seems he's fighting the tide at the moment.

Can't disagree with most of what's already been said. Hoever, didn't stop any crosses coming in, can't pass, slow in moving the ball and is lazy. Dendoncker usual sideways backwards and also gave the ball away in dangerous positions several times in the second half. Trincao, total passenger, cowardly, lightweight and spent most of the second half hiding behind opposition players so he couldn't receive the ball. Sa m.o.m. for me.
That game was there for the taking, West Ham were no great shakes. Dawson, Zouma and Rice were their best players.

Yeah anyone having a go at Silva for this one needs to give their heads a wobble. No-one was particularly good till the late subs.
First point of blame has to be Lage...you can't start with only 5 first choice players in a game like this.
Possibly the worst performance by a Wolves player this season, I never want to see Hoever again, surely Jonny at 25% would be better, no redeeming qualities at all.
Worst game all season from Coady and Neves.
Marcal just a body. Trincao had a few decent touches early on then disappeared.
Donk....same old same old.
The goal was comedy, Saiss mainly at fault going walkabout but Coady also just watched the ball roll past him.
Apart from his first half miss Hwang had very little effect on the game.

Yep really inept performance, 1-0 flattered us. Hoever sorry simply isn’t good enough for this level.
Trincao just lazy half arsed performance again, not committing to tackles.
Saiss nodding off for the goal. Forget Europe two reasons weren’t good enough.
The team selection was another case of Bruno overthinking but like v Norwich.
Stop with these stupid flicks in the box, special mention for the set peices and crosses that almost all found Fabianski gloves or Zouma head.
Only chance we might have is if Spurs don’t fancy the conference league next season and dip out towards the end. You’re probably going to need 60 points to come 7th looking at our remaining games I think we’ll be short of that.

Shocking from Bruno today who basically waved the white flag before a ball was kicked. I don’t watch the lads day in day out in training, but I could have told you a front three of Hwang, Fabio & Trincao could be playing for a month without looking like scoring. Appalling tactics and appalling performance from pretty much everyone.

Neto looked lively when he came on, but the game was already lost by then (late changes an issue again - and if he’d pick the right team to begin with we wouldn’t have had to worry about the substitutions making a difference).

Get the impression Bruno is trying to be too clever at the moment (although he was let down badly by the players today). Just pick your best 11 and be done with it. If Neto, or whoever, isn’t fit enough to play the whole game, get in front and then worry about making the changes after.

We’ve thrown 5th/6th place away because both Arsenal and West Ham were very beatable.

Our next 6 games will tell us a lot about what Bruno wants us to be now he has a full squad (Semedo aside).

Crystal Palace (H)
Watford (H)
Everton (A)
Leeds (H)
Aston Villa (H)
Newcastle (A)

We should be taking 12 points as a minimum from that lot.

Sa
Kilman Coady Saiss
Jonny Moutinho Neves RAN
Neto Jimenez Podence

Our current best XI at the moment IMO until Semedo is back. Obvs Jonny/Neto likely can't play a full 90 mins yet so that needs to be managed with Hoever and Hwang.

I understood elements of the starting 11. The team looked fucked on Thursday night so didn't surprise me the manager thought a few of them weren't ready to go again so soon. What that didn't show though was a lack of squad depth, you can absolutely criticise the quality, but the 5 that came in today including captain peaheart will cost us north of £90m come the summer.

We've been poor all week, and probably got 2 points more than the performances deserved. Compare West Ham defending a 1-0 lead today versus us on Thursday night, particularly offensively, no real plan how to break them down, just go through the middle and try a fancy flick. Thought Fabio did OK in the second half, decent movement but doesn't have any of the other attributes you want in a centre forward - finishing, hold up play, strength, pace, heading ability, but he wasn't the issue. Didn't think Hoever was as bad as others have said, but he's not good enough and doubt ever will be. Saiss made the kind of errors we've not seen this season, went to sleep on the foul on Johnson for the Cresswell free kick and a brain fart for the goal. Kilman has dropped a level for the last few games.

This week was always pivotal and unfortunately we now know the way it's going. 4 at the back from next week please

Oh, and the tippy/tappy safe stuff in & around the half way line can piss right off.

As soon as Neto comes on he hits a diagonal to Silva and nearly gets him in behind. Possession means nothing when you don’t do anything with it.

Closer to Southampton now than we are Man Utd when 2 games ago we were a win away from them with a game in hand

Looked like Bruno picked a experimental team for a pre season match rather than a team to challenge for a European place. Sa was my MOTM, couldn`t pick an outfield player. I give the kid 10 out of 10 for effort and I would give him a few games to rest Raul with two quality players either side of him . Podence and Neto.

We have nothing to lose by just going 4 at the back

Sa
Jonny, Kilman, Coady, RAN

Moutinho, Neves

Podence, Neto

Raul, Hwang/Fabio

Straight on here and not yet read the other verdicts, but two things:

1) West Ham are a very poor side that we gifted an easy three points to

2) We’re better (league position wise) than in 95+% of the time I’ve supported the club, but my god we’re boring to watch. If I was a neutral our games would never get me tuning in.

Why have we regressed to Nuno’s last season or have we become a Hoddlesque team? Even when we’ve been shit we’ve had a go and players just haven’t been good enough. I said the other day a lack of effort is something you couldn’t accuse this group of but so many of them have a negativity to every aspect of their play.

I was a defensive midfielder and loved a close fought game or clean sheet but it was always with a view to getting something at the other end as well. Players bottling tackles, or as I see it responsibility, wouldn’t have lasted as long in the game as they do now and they certainly wouldn’t have been valued at £10m, £14m, £18m, £25m etc

Errr no Bruno we played shite, same as the last game.

Wolves boss Bruno Lage, speaking to Match of the Day: "When you look for the game, both teams played well, that is the thing we need to say. We started better in the first 20 minutes and after West Ham came.

"We continued to play our way, the way we conceded the goal is disappointing, but in the end of February, we have 12 or 13 games and our goal is to continue in the same way that we played here against this tough team.

"When you look for the game, the way we played against a strong team and a manger with experience away from home - in the middle of February, we have 40 points, we put our fans to dream about the Champions League.

"The next three months we need to continue to play the same way, grow up and fight for every point until the end of the season."
