Wolves 0-0 Chelsea: Verdict Thread

VAR shouldn’t exist. Although I think it probably does get more decisions right than wrong there remains too many issues with it and all it has done is shifted the talking points for the benefit of TV audiences.

In the stadium yesterday….we scored, everyone had taken turns to congratulate Podence, the goal music had finished and they had announced the scorer. Then the flag goes up. I had to wait for an internet connection to find out who was offside, there was no indication that VAR was in play. As it happens, it was the right decision and Raul was offside by a clear margin and had clearly attempted to play the ball.

As for Kante. It looked obvious in real time, it looked obvious in the highlights. He moved his arm out where it shouldn’t have been and the ball hit his arm. If it was a penalty against Moutinho then Kante’s was a red card all day long. I don’t even know if it was checked by VAR because I was in the stadium and we don’t get told.

VAR is a stain on the game, it hasn‘t added anything…just shifted the focus of any controversy.

I don't think there's any benefit for any spectactors, regardless of their viewpoint, in theory the only beneficiaries are the clubs getting more correct decisions, though in practice it's not always the case.

If I'm sat watching a game at home, or even listening on the radio as I was for the first half yesterday, then it's still shit to have a 5 minute break for a bit of admin when all I want to do is watch, or listen, to someone football. That's a negative impact for me without a doubt.

Though as you say it's certainly worse in the stadium, at least I'm informed what's going on and the final decision when I'm sat at home whereas you're left in the dark at the ground. I think it's just more of a negative for live viewers rather than positive/negative for TV compared to live.

I assume he's gonna go for the Ederson on Fraser incident too. Can't understand why that wasn't a pen.

Edit: yep and he went for Mike Riley, using the Jon Moss penalty against us last week as an example of officiating being way below par.
The Kante handball never got discussed on MOTD, which I found bizzare.
Oh well, another disappointment by being a Wolves fan.

As Deutsch mentioned, 2 goals in 8 games isn't sustainable and needs fixing.

Given how good our defence is at the moment can we not afford to be a bit more adventurous in games against bottom half clubs?

In the first three games we set up exactly the same as now but with Marcal at LWB and Traore/Trincao either side of Raul. We only lost by a single goal too and didn't look like we were getting over-run.

Apart from switching Podence for one of those front two we could easily play a bit more of an attacking game where necessary.

Yeah and in those 8 games our xG has been 4.4 while our xG against has been 12.1.

we've done pretty well to have as many points as we do I think, gives us breathing space and if the club were to back Bruno you'd be pretty optimistic. However, it seems unlikely we will spend much or recruit that well so I hope that if/when we have a bit of a bad run we don't just turn on the manager.

Tbf I think in the first half yesterday we saw a good template for us to be more freely attacking. We were excellent and Moutinho especially was thriving on the left of midfield with a free reign to get forward.

Shame for Dendoncker, but really, if we had a better third option there (and plan better for the introduction of players like Saul to clog space) I think it could be potentially quite exciting.

Missed this game due to kids sports and going for a few beers after, by the sounds of it I didn't miss much apart from a goal ruled out and a handball not given

VAR is done for me, it's pretty easy how to use it in a way that works but it's been implemented by idiots. I think it's best to drop this completely, its of no benefit to fans and just detracts from the game.

The impression I’m getting is that refs aren’t making decisions that they should be because they assume that VAR will correct them if they are wrong. Problem then comes when VAR stick with the on field decision.

Two weeks in a row now where I feel we have been on the wrong side of that situation.

VAR has been around for a while and I still struggle to see any obvious benefit that it brings to the game. We have as much controversy as ever so what’s really the point?

Your last paragraph sums things up in a nutshell.

Not that I'm sad and all that or wanting to prove a point, but from a set of fairly 'grainy' frames, I have managed to track the ball movement from the point before it was anywhere near Kante to when it strikes his arm. Not in anyway scientific, but the only constants are the position of his left foot and the angle of his arm during the sequence, that actually don't move until after the ball is away from his body.
The ball does not deviate until after its struck his arm and clearly did not deflect off his chest from the TV angle views I have used.
Apologies for being a sado!Kante.JPG

It was pretty clear from the TV angles it hit his chest first

There's two touches, it doesn't roll down his arm so it has to be his chest. Not on MOTD, not on the Sky ref piece. His arm shouldn't be there, it should be handball, but it isn't by the interpretation of the law

But they are spending based on transfer fees received rather than profits. We can only go off recent events which is how the club is being run, with a net spend of 0. The amount of money we make from gate receipts and TV is completely separate, unless you think they'll start to sell players and not replace them at all, which is a sure fire way to completely piss off your customers.

The chances of us finishing 17th is pretty much zero either way. We'll end up in midtable and we would likely finish around the same position if we are a bit more adventurous going forward, however the entertainment value is much higher.

The way we've played this season in large parts is very similar to the way we played last season when a large % of fans were quite rightly unhappy with the style, myself included. I was especially annoyed yesterday that we had an opponent missing plenty of players, to the extent they had people playing in positions they've never played and we just sat in to nick a point, whilst i froze my bollocks off.

That resulted in some slightly hyperbolic statements but I stand by the point that the way we are setting up is shit to watch.
I agree it’s not a thrilling watch, but being 8th rather than 13th makes it more bearable IMO.

If you’re playing shit football and struggling/underachieving in the league its unbearable, as what’s the bloody point.

I accept the 17th position is abit hyperbole, was just being an arse and latching onto your comment to be fair.

The point about if we’d lost the next few Lage could’ve been gone is a good point. He probably thought ‘shit, I need to get points on the board here’ and hence the more pragmatic approach

Yeah it’s the law more than anything. However if it was given as handball I’m not sure it would’ve been over turned

I do agree with this. Perfectly acceptable setting up like that against the top 3, but having 0-0 draws with Burnley and Norwich isn’t good enough and needs to be looked at

It would have been, but that's when the Top 6 debate comes into play
