As to scapegoating - really not sure thats whats going on. If a player continually puts in weak performances he gets called out for it, particularly if he keeps getting picked over someone who has shown better quality previously.

Doherty has been a whipping boy at times quite fairly due to how he performed - of late he has improved and has seemingly (at least in the short term) eliminated much of the worst traits & is not now being lambasted. If he can keep this level up then he will not be criticised, if he doesn't & reverts to previous levels he will.

No reason that any other player cannot aspire to that, though the performances have to improve to get that accolade

But Doherty (or SuperDoc as me and my family are calling him lately) is a perfect example of this not being true. People who have previously slated him have been giving him excellent ratings from games because he has been excellent.

I think the emergence can be partly attributed to the dull negative midfield KJ has employed in front of them. It is very very functional but this means we have no creativity going forward. Coady and Saville are very good at what they are being asked to do. Dave Edwards was very good at what he was asked to do. Meanwhile our best midfielder (who can control and pass a football ) has been bombed out and is on his bike by the look of it. The whole team was very functional yesterday but like previous weeks didn't look like it would score in a brothel. Although we have clean sheets our defence is still ultimately not good enough.

Only once the shot was blocked and then hit Saville who was standing in an offside position after his header. The Mason shot though was on target and blocked by the hand of Duffy i think.
