Wolves 1-0 Fulham: Verdict Thread

We won - it wasn’t great, but it’s a step up from last week. All sides have dips in form - we’re not playing great but have 6 points from 4 games - not terrible.

Positives
Rui - solid as ever
Kilman - very assured
Semedo - great going forward
Hoever - solid cameo
Boly - better performance
Donk - adds strength and height to midfield
RAN will add balance

We've been that side huffing and puffing at a much better (albeit haven't properly turned up) team and left with nothing enough times under MM so should recognise thats what today was only today, we were the decent team.

We weren't good, at all. If you cant be good don't lose. We didn't lose.

Its obvious the disruption is upsetting ourselves, City and Yanited owing to Europe so, for now we're relying on those individual moments.

Fingers crossed, another couple of weeks and games for some internationally sees us ready to kick on.

Kilman does well when he plays. Boly looked happier as you say and more athletic. Otherwise there isnt much to shout about. Undeserved three points tbf. Fulham were worth a point and would have had one with a modicum of finishing ability. We will not be challenging the top half playing like this.
In what world were Fulham deserving of a point?

They had one chance and one player who looked a threat. Other than that they were shite. No redeeming qualities beyond looking slightly less shambolic at the back than they had done in the opening 3 games. We were a little slow/sloppy in possession and sat a little too deep in the end but we were much better than Fulham.

Yeah meant to say, credit to Kilman. Came in having not played in a very long time, was very solid and used the ball pretty well.

Nuno has confirmed Semedo wasn't injured. Just struggling to get through 90 minutes at the moment.

Agreed did the job looked solid and composed, never have a problem with him covering in this side reality is I think he’s do a good job at a lot of PL clubs

Ok, I'll give my (probably simplistic) view.
Thought we looked disjointed and a bit all over the place first 20 minutes. Started to get it together from then and gradually improved till we were dominating them completely up till about last 15 minutes.
Raul should score his one on one and apart from a worldie double save Semedo gets on the score sheet.
The goal was coming, they were struggling to stay in the game, terrific finish from Neto.
Thought Nuno's decision to manage the game set us back, unfortunately Moutinho (much as I love him) just couldn't get into the game and his mistake nearly let them back in ( they should score).
Raul is a terrific player but sometimes he frustrates the hell out of me, a couple of times when we trying to see the game out, he picked up the ball in midfield and rather just keeping it simple and laying the ball off, decided to run into 3 defenders, giving the ball away cheaply and putting them on the attack.
On the whole thought we deserved to win, Semedo looks quality, Kilman did well and even Saiss did ok at lwb.
Lots of plus points but still plenty to work on imo....to be expected with new players and trying to change our style with no training time

Since lockdown the trying to kill the game with an extra midfielder tactic hasn't worked. Burnley, Sheff Utd, today. Yes we didn't concede, but we gave the initiative away.

If anyone wants to run as a mod on a banning XG from being mentioned platform, they'll get my support. It's just a bollocks stat

The best midfielder we have for shutting a game down is Saiss.

XG mention ban seconded.

Your first point is right I’d say

Your second is not :D

Agreed. We do give the initiative away too much and xG is not bollocks when worked out and used correctly to assess a game with what you actually saw and the other stats.

Well according to Andy, which I'm taking on trust we drew 1-1 today with a slightly lower 1. From the watching the game with my eyes perspective, we scored one, which was probably low on the XG front, should have scored another and their keeper made a great save on a third. They should have scored one on a par with ours and other than that they got into decent areas positionally but didn't really hurt us. There was a lot to frustrate about that performance, but on balance we did deserve to win

Yeah i've seen that xG from infogol and i think they have missed the Jimenez chance off for some reason. We deserved to win despite being nowhere near the levels we know the team is capable of, yes Fllham should have equalised but we should have scored twice before we did.

Nice thing about xG - and other player stats from Infogol etc - is that it is from an impartial source. Not always a common commodity on here, but let's not fall out. We won. RAN has signed. Romain Saiss has injured a player with his knob...

https://understat.com/match/14474

It's just calculated really weirdly, this is the problem.

Semedo's chance is 0.39, Kamara's is 0.57, that's far too much of a mark up in Fulham's favour.

The Raul one is measured at 0.07 :icon_lol: He was clean through on goal FFS.

So this Kilman bloke that everyone thinks did really well, should keep his place in the team, didn’t look out of place in the Premier League. Is it the same bloke I got mocked about for saying he should be considered a first team player and one for the Premier League squad?
Just wondering...
Rui, did what he had to do and not troubled

Boly, better than the last few games and a little more composed

Coady, another who put a ropey display behind him

Kilman, played really well and didn’t put a foot wrong

Semedo, probably MotM and looks quality. (Am I allowed to say that because he’s only played a couple of games)

Saiss, hmmm lwb huh? Didn’t do a lot wrong and even managed a mazy dribble down the wing in the second half

Neves, a better game from him and broke play up well

Dendoncker, can’t say I noticed him doing much wrong but seemed a bit quiet. Maybe how he was asked to play

Podence, some flashes of the player we’ve come to love but a couple of errors/wrong decisions but it’ll be fine when he gets back up to speed

Raul, seems a little off at the moment. Should have buried that one on one and a couple of times he made the wrong choice. However he’s a class player and will get his form back

Neto, very close to MotM, lovely goal and plenty of work from him. As soon as the Podence/Raul/Neto front line clicks we’ll wonder what all the worrying was about

Subs?
Moutinho made an error that led to Fulham’s big chance but not a lot else

Hoever, you can tell the lads going to be good and not worried about him starting if he has to

Traore, didn’t do a lot, didn’t have a lot of time to do that either...

So the thing with xG is different companies/clubs/people have different models with different variables. Statsbomb are probably the ones with the best as they include things like position of defenders/GK, height of the ball rather than just shot location. So infogol/understat are more basic models, but are freely available so are the ones used. That's why I don't swear by it anyway, I just find it useful to add to any analysis.

The other thing is that xG is far more useful to use to assess long-term performance than a single game. Anything can happen in one game, such is football (and why we love it) that players can miss complete open goals or score worldies and they win the game. It just so happened today that the biggest chance of the game, IMO, fell to Kamara who is shit, whereas for us Neto scored a really quality finish from a tough angle with defenders in front of him. So that's why you can see a real disparity between xG and the real result sometimes.

For those who don't like the term/name - just think of it as common sense. The teams who consistently create good chances, and concede very few good chances, tend to be the teams who do best in the long run! Everyone who watched today's game knows that performance isn't sustainable, and that's what the xG is also telling us..

Problem for Max is, is he better than Saiss? or Marcal? In a position plenty want us to 'upgrade' in anyway.

I'm very pleased for him regardless, good footballer, obviously rated enough by Nuno and even if not with us, can have a decent career. Impressive considering he's been rejected multiple times by clubs and just over two years ago was still playing in non-league

I like Max - but at his age he really needs games. If it’s going to be a run of games for us then cool, if not then he needs to get out on loan.

He has the potential to be really good imo.
