Wolves 1-1 Norwich: Verdict Thread

Coady has been much more aggressive this season, as you say, rather than a sweeper he's been pushing into midfield and hitting tackles, it worked really well at the start of the season, but as the season has gone on it's been less and less productive.

If we assume we are going to a back 2 of Kilman + someone new next season, then I'd have Gomes ahead of Coady as first reserve, maybe even Mosquera if he stays fit. Therefore the sensible thing would be sell him now whilst his value is high. He'll want the the move protect his WC place if he's told what the plan is. His leadership off the pitch is unquestioned but on it he's more of a hindrance than a help.

The flaw in that paragraph is the word sensible

You see the Newcastle fans I know are really hopeful that they will sign Conor because of his leadership (a given) but also because of his passing, positioning and the fact he's quicker than the defenders they currently have.
Football fans of other teams see strange things...

It depends what you want him to be. He was tremendous for us for 3 seasons in that sweeper role, but Nuno and now Bruno wanted to evolve away from that. I'm sure that if Newcastle or whoever wanted him to do that he'd be tremendous again. As a 3rd centre half, particularly one in a higher line he's a liability as unfortunately is Boly

I fear for us anyway next season, but if we lose the leadership and spirit of both Neves and Coady we are well and truly fucked.

Not to apportion unfair blame, but Coady's undoubted heart, organisation and leadership hasn't exactly done much to arrest our awful form for the past couple of months.

At least some of our new signings should have some leadership and motivational characteristics anyway, whether Conor stays or goes. We don't want a team full of Trincaoesque pea-hearts

Been carrying an injury for a good while hasn’t he?

I might be in a minority but I appreciate what Coady brings to the side - both as a footballer and as our Captain.

What he lacks in pace, he makes up for in commitment - he passes nicely (when we actually play on the front foot) and had added a couple of goals to his game.

We are (whether you like it or not) a mid table side and Coady is probably a mid table defender - he’s certainly no worse than a couple of the CD’s at Arsenal/Spurs/Leicester/Palace/Newcastle and that’s been our level this year.

Added to that, he’s a regular England international.

We hear a lot of moaning on here about “losing our identity “ - well, I don’t fancy losing the bloke that’s helped bring Wolves identity back into the Premier League and into the top ten sides in English football.

Obviously, not feelings shared by us all.

Bruno or Coady or whoever are on record saying that they have redefined his role to be more agressive to play the higher line without exposing his lack of pace. Unfortunately you can’t do that when Mane is standing right in front of you and you leave him free.

The other issue is that the outside CBs are then too far apart leaving that gaping hole. So if you don’t win the ball your fucked. It’s an awful plan really unless you are engaging the further most forward player and the other CBs are then closing that space.
