Wolves 1-1 Southampton Verdict Thread

Good entertaining game and a fair result.

I thought we played well overall, created a lot of chances and should have scored more than one. Understandably a bit shaky at the back against a very good team given the new formation and no Coady. I would actually like us to play 4 at the back more especially in easier games as it allows all of Neto, Podence and Traore on the pitch at the same time. Think Neto needs to start for sure as he just offers more of a goal threat than anyone other than Raul.

Neto over Podence every day of the week and I don't think it's that close tbh

Podence vs Traore is a bit more of a tossup

We won't see that midfield 3 behind a front 3 again assuming Coady comes back so it's not worth ruminating on - was a distinct lack of creativity though

Awful from Semedo on the goal...foul or not you cannot switch off like that.

It's not much of a toss up for me - Podence is more of a goal threat than Traore and on the evidence so far Semedo looks far less comfortable when Traore is in front of him. I'd just out Neto Raul Podence back.

That last 20 mins was great. Podence in the #10, Moutinho getting forward. Was carnage, but good carnage.

Don’t think any of that back 4 are good enough individually to play in 1 at this level. They all had their moments. Certainly need more work On the training ground.

First 70 mins Donck and Moutinho were largely awful and offered nothing in possession, which meant we struggled to keep the ball and get the front 3 In the game. Putting them in the 4-2-3-1 helped them both though and then we saw more from the front 3.

RAN was naive defensively and didn’t really offer enough going forward to counter that. Would be picking Marcal if we ever play a 4 again. Semedo is infuriating, does awful things but also great at the same time. £30m and he’s not a a young kid anymore - needs to be more consistent.

I’m willing to give it more of a go. Certainly more entertaining than the usual borefest even if it was carnage and we looked awful and great all
At the same time.

Semedo left on an island too often. Adama doesn't track effectively and Donck was nowhere defensively.

In some ways we looked every bit a team playing a system we've never played under Nuno, but there were positive signs. We were able to pressure the ball more consistently higher up the pitch, we lost out on far fewer 50/50s, and we actually created some wide overloads.

Against a good Southampton side, missing Coady for the first time ever under Nuno, I'll happily take a point.

Fair result, although we had more of the better chances.
To me we look so disjointed atm for large parts of games, we were definitely better when Neto came on and fully deserved our point, Raul in particular looked a different player.
Semedo blows hot and cold imo, hopefully he settles down in a few games.
RAN started the second half well but for some reason he seems scared to run with the ball a lot of the time and he is far too light weight defensively, not sure what to do with him in the short term.
Not keen on 4 at the back.
Traore is just too hit and miss, a couple of good runs gut usually up blind alleys or out wide where he struggles to get a decent pass in, don't know why he doesn't come inside more often, defenders would cack their pants.
Still a point against a decent team while missing our capt/organizer isn't too shabby

I honestly thought that was awful until the last 20 minutes when we subbed neves.
I thought neves played well, but he, Donk and Moutinho doesn’t work as a three, far too defensive minded, no one there that can pass and move, or create.

I thought Donk was awful, moutinho was even worse until the last 20 minutes when he was really good. Podence was really poor, apart from winning headers against big defenders (it was so weird).

Ait Nouri went backwards with everything until the last twenty when he went forwards and looked good. He goes down way too easily, but he’ll learn.

I really didn’t enjoy that game, we weren’t fluid, we weren’t solid, far too much slow passing backwards, not enough quick attacking going forwards.

I guess it’s a decent point given we were without Coady and playing an unfamiliar formation, but we’ve been so much more than the sum of our parts the last few years and it feels like we’re less at the moment.

hopefully Nuno can get us ready for boring boring arsenal next week.

Watching their goal again I've got a little sympathy (very little) for Semedo, he's picking up djenepo and boly has walcott, once djenepo crosses the ball Boly goes after Armstrong? but it didnt seem like he communicated to semedo that walcott was there, admittedly if semedo looks over his right shoulder at any point he'd pick him up.

Happy with a point, a lot of positives and a few negatives but a better showing in the second half.
Ref was abysmal but what’s new there

Have to admit I didn't think the ref got a ton wrong? Allowed Adama to get fouled too much without showing a card but aside from that?

If a back 4 is part of the 'evolution' Nuno was talking about in pre-season then we have a hell of a lot of evolving still to do. Not happy with how we defended at all but can see the obvious benefits in attack.

Semedo was excellent apart from the one stupid error. RAN much more of a mixed bag. Again, a lot of learning to do.

we had asked for a shape change and we got it. By and large we limited them to few chances but there were several hair rasing moments, Ithought we missed Coadys gob at the back and his boot to accurately clear. There was a period of hoofball when we just gave the ball back to them. The goal was poor. RAN could have been fouled but you still get up and dont lay there rolling around unless its serious. It wasnt so up you get cupcake. You are a premier league defender so defend. I feared the worse when we went behind but Neto changed things and we looked far more dangerous the last 20 minutes. 20 shots , 9 on target that is the sort of return we need to have a chance of winning games and scoring more than 1 goal. Mccathry did well for them today. I said I would oddly , prefer a point and a performance before a ball was kicked so you wont get me grumbling about that now. Enjoyable game for the neutral by and large.

There weren't any clear errors really although I did think Vestergaard should've been booked. In terms of niggly fouls, Southampton probably have more to complain about than us but tbh I prefer a referee who is willing to let those go and allow the game to flow. with a different ref that could've been a bit stop-start but it ended up being quite entertaining.

I thought Semedo played really well and I like RAN. We created a lot and 9 shots on target out of 20 against their 2. If Raul had turned up for the first 70 minutes it would have helped. We should have won.

Yeah he didn’t really. Mariners a decent ref, who tends to be lenient. The neves one was a yellow. Traores probably wasn’t and Vestergaard probably should have got one. No big deal.

Genuinely, awful.

You know we had 20 shots with 9 on target and didn't lose.

It wasn't even a Swansea 2-2 level of awful under Mick.

I thought we were largely poor with the ball and Donk was stinking until Neves went off. He looks miles better in a ball winning role and we look miles better attacking with our potent front 4.

I'm going all Keggie Keegan and would rather watch aus win 4-3 every week than a tedious Catennacio 1-0.

But I do understand I'm probably in the minority there,
