Wolves 1-2 Everton: Verdict Thread

Seems to me that the kid needs strength, pace and finishing training before he`s even ready for the subs bench. Christ`s sake Nuno, play Cutrone up top. Make him the whipping boy if nothing else. Not seen much of Hoever but I would rather see him given a chance at right back.

The problem is he himself is 18, even less senior experience than Fabio. I would have replaced MGW with Cutrone or Vitinha anyway
I understand that but young wingers, who opponents know nothing about, are often very dangerous. Hoever was never going to beat a man - playing him at RB and moving Semedo forwards would have made more sense.

I maintain the goals conceded are a bigger issue than the goals scored. We've not been a free scoring team in the PL, but we did keep things tight. With the lack of Raul at least the goals scored element is explainable the soft goals conceded aren't.

Good point, if one is going to end up under the bus I’d rather it’s Pat

Should Donk have done better blocking the cross for the winner, or is that harsh?

also - should it have been a penalty where Mina elbowed Ki in the head?

The performances have been similar all season tbf, but now we're not scraping wins, people aren't wanking themselves silly over 'our best start in Premier League history', as those cracks aren't being papered over.

It's probably gone a bit too far the other way now, in that results are probably a bit harsh compared to the performances, as opposed to us having more points on the board than we really deserved 5-6 weeks ago.

We were alright today, first half, but again created a paucity of proper chances, but with that midfield three it's probably a given that that's going to happen. I thought RAN was excellent, but Saiss and Semedo are both pretty clearly weak links in a back four. Going forward we've basically got nothing without Neto. Traore is clearly hot and mainly cold, and tbh I'm not convinced by Podence either, his technique is wicked but I've got reservations on his decision making and and the way he connects with teammates.

I've said before we've just got to accept this season as a nothing, give the kids time and experience (though Fabio needs more time off the pitch in the next 2 months tbh), hope we don't lose too much talent in the summer, and reassess, spend some proper money, and go again. We need a strong summer window, as we've not had one that's dramatically improved the starting eleven since our first window in the Premier League imo.

He should have done better. We have been letting sides get easy crosses in to the box for weeks now. Saiss & Coady are big lads - but for whatever reason, they just seem to lose headers at vital moments.

I said it in the matchday thread but to score against us, you literally need to keep getting the ball wide and getting crosses in. Eventually one will find a target and end up in the back of the net.

Neither are ball attacking centre halves defensively. It's either/or and a more conventional ball hawk next to him if we are going to play a 4

How did we go from being the most solid defence to any fucker can score against us these days?

As I said before it was a good cross and a good header. If we'd have scored that we'd be spaffing ourselves.

His intentions and work ethics are clearly good but the abilities not quite there right now.
As i've been alluding to. When it starts hurting the team then you have to change tack. Especially as a clean sheet has become something we don't do anymore.

We are saying it every game. If only that header/shot/free kick went in. If my mom had bollocks she'd have been me Dad.

First time I have questioned Nuno tonight, was bringing However on at that point in the game!

The main thing I find frustrating is the lack of any kind of adventure there were times when players made runs and RAN and Semedo were open and if we had the ball in the middle of the park that's where it stayed ( usually sideways or backwards afterwards) we did try a few early on but Neves's radar was well off so we never bothered again
Yup. Comms made a point that Ancelotti wants Everton to be more aggressive/direct with their passing - we could definitely stand to do the same. At least once a game Semedo will be in space and go to make a run in behind and we never, ever even try to play it. And that's just the most obvious example off the top of my head.

I think CM is becoming a problem, perversely since it should be a strength of the team. Neves' form has been a lot better recently - having said that I thought Moutinho was below par tonight (he seemed to take 2-3 extra touches before releasing the ball frequently and it killed our momentum a couple times) and Donck...I just don't know what to make of.

He clearly does *a* job for the team but what that actually *is* I'm not sure. His passing is very rarely progressive, his movement is a mishmash - gets in good positions sometimes, seems to wander and take up space people are trying to open up at others - and, well, enough said about the finishing. Oddly I think he works better in a 2, but the others work better in a 3.

The interplay/off the ball movement in general needs a lot of work. Not easy with a lot of young players and lineups that keep changing, either through necessity or coach's decisions, but we seem to do a huge amount of our attacking in front of the defence, we very rarely get them turned or get in behind.

1) yes but the defending by Saiss is also poor

2) absolutely but those type are never given so can’t expect it to be
