Wolves 1-3 Man City - Verdict Thread

I said it on the transfer thread the other day and I'll say it again now . We simply are not scoring enough .

Yes we were bossed all over by Man City in the first half and were made look poor , but when we changed tack in the second half we simply didn't put away the chances that we created , bar one , and we had really good ones . We simply have to correct this - there is little point being on top in a match and having rakes of possession if there is zero on the scoreboard .
Buying 18 and 20 years olds who have oceans of talent is great , but we need a mix of experience as well who can walk onto the first team and perform straightaway .
If our ambition only is to finish 14th ish in the Premier League , then none of the above matters , but it's not , we want to be a top 4 team . We need goals and plenty of them to achieve that .

You’re basing this all on one match?

I don't think we're in much danger of finishing 4th or 14th, we're somewhere between that (much closer to the top).

I think apart from the wing backs we aren't going to see experience walk into the starting team, don't think that's the way we're doing it. Hasn't done us badly so far.

More goals scored without conceding more is the tricky balancing act we now face, and pushing through the glass ceiling from 7th to higher is a very big ask.

There's obviously plans for evolution this season, we'll just have to see what Semedo brings, how much impact the young lads can have, and what goals Neto and Pod can bring.

I'd definitely like to see some way of getting more goals from elsewhere in the team though. Maybe a subtle shift in playing style could free someone up once we get the WB situation healthier?

I agree with all of that!

We simply aren't going to be signing players that might displace Raul, Neves, or even Podence from the side. If that's your expectation, I'd suggest changing it. Even if we do upgrade, it'll be in the wingback or defensive positions, with maybe a central midfielder who might offer us something different.

I'd be way more concerned if we hadn't created anything, but we created plenty. Most nights, Raul buries his chance, or Neves catches Podence's lay-off sweetly, and it's an entirely different result.

I think here lies the biggest chance of us getting a surprise addition.

I actually think there are more goals in Dendoncker depending on how we use him. Getting Neves scoring a few more would be nice too

Donk could score a few - but I’d like a midfielder who can create as well as score - Donk has 5 assists in 276 appearances in all competitions in his career, it’s just not part of his game.

Post lock down at the end of last season creativity was a problem. Against Stoke it was a problem. Against City second half and against Sheffield there were no issues with creativity but issues with the quality of finish. Just to be clear thats my feeling.

Our midfield does not score enough goals in truth for the talent they have. Neves only scores worldys , Moutinho from set pieces and Donk the occasional finish via head or edge of the box. Doherty scored more than Traore(i think?) and thats a worry and Raul, scores about 40% of our goals full stop so I think it is fair when other posters raise the concerns on finishing particularly when Jota is no longer here so we are 16 goals light in all competitions. Silva and Podence have both missed chances against City and Stoke that Jota, Raul would have scored. So if their level of finishing is a little lower we do need to be even more creative ( as we need to create more chances as we will miss more) and it would be nice to have a Raul back up who would score 10 a season. My personal opinion is that Traore up front will create more chances for Raul and whoever backs him up which is another reason I think he is utterly wasted at wing back as well as being bloody useless there on occasions.

Do we create through midfield though? My guess is that the final assist in open play comes from WB or WF for Raul or other forwards and the majority of that last year was Traore to Raul. Then its set pieces as second and Donk doesnt get near those to take. His finishing however has been good when given the chance with head or foot. He just doesnt get the chance very often.

Last seasons most interesting stat for me was that we only kept 1 clean sheet with Vinny at WB and 9 with Jonny. Ok he played there more but even so that a decent difference.

No , absolutely not . I'm covering all of last season as well .

Siging Semedo is a very good sign for me , as was Marcal - both can walk straight into the team . Marcal I know is just a replacement for Jonny , but he is also an upgrade on Rubens Junior .

There were a number of games last season where we could have scored more and didn't leading to draws and defeats when they might have been wins and draws . A 40% improvement on that would be huge , and that's all we might need to break that glass ceiling .

So we lost and drew 25 games in the league last season, 40% of that is 10 games ? that's quite a sizable jump for any team

Neves was in the city box on more than one occasion monday. There's definitely an intention for midfielders to be more involved in attacking play.

We drew a lot of games last season to be fair .

Many years ago there was an advert for Castrol Oil that was described as Liquid Engineering. That's exactly what MC were first half. Their one touch passing and pressing would have rendered any other teams problems. We were fortunate possibly to only have conceded one goal. As we know, we will get chances, but unfortunately 2 very good ones were spurned. We are not going to face this quality every week, so hopefully we can get back to winning ways against WH
