Wolves 2-1 Chelsea: Verdict Thread

I have not been a fan of Attwell for a while, but he had a good game last night. I didn't really notice him and that is always a good thing to say about a ref.
Apart from the shocking call for a foul when Boly won the ball against Werner (?) He was looking right at that and still gave a free kick.

Big fan of Marcal, but I wonder if were reverting to this formation Aït-Nouri would be a better option, he'd have the support of Saiss beside him and seems a better attacking option
Horses for courses. Against better teams I’d definitely pick Marcal, against teams that set up defensively Ait Nouri.

You got a bit of time to kill??

He's behind on daily like quota :)

I've seen a replay of the incident between Neto and James and am now pretty sure that there was contact.

Initially I concentrated on the feet and couldn't see a trip, nor contact. But when I looked higher up the legs, James's right thigh seems to catch Neto's left calf which is what I think fetches him down, so IMO we should have had a penalty.

It's a badly executed dive just likely the Coady one was, there's no need to continually try and make excuses for it. In many ways no different to what Fernandes, Kane, Zaha, Grealish etc do other than they are skilled enough to make sure there is contact by dragging their foot across the defenders rather than predicting it.

Fairly or otherwise we will be getting a reputation for it though

We will get a rep and thats what pisses me off, the players you mention are serial divers and hardly if ever get called out on it. We've had a couple in a few weeks but we rarely dive on the whole, DW mentioned it earlier, Traore picking up a card, the only one this season for simulation, its especially galling cos replays showed enough contact for it to be pen but var didn't pick it up.

my lad mentioned that last night...still don't think there was enough contact for a penalty though, but not a dive imo (unless its Salah or Grealish) more he loses his balance.
neto was saying earlier that the ref said he heard a noise which is why he gave it initially

It’s a Wolves player, going down in the box - it’s a penalty. it’s an opposition player going down, not a penalty. I don’t care whether there is contact, these are conversations for “after” a game that have been going on ever since penalties were first invented. I don’t care if it is clear and obvious - for over a 100 years that has been a penalty (or not) in the top leagues and on a Sunday morning down the park, jumpers for goalposts, young men running around with their athletically lithe torsos on show, mmmm marvellous.

VAR is cheating us

Completely disagree with this. There was no 'dive' at all and my post was not making excuses for a dive either.

IMO this is a cynical post that was entirely unnecessary.

Are refs not allowed to book players after a review on a penalty? Coads should have had a card and maybe Neto or are refs taking into account anticipation of contact as a reason now?

I have only ever seen 1 player booked after a review in the Prem but that was Raul after he scored v Southampton after the ball hit his arm and the fuckwit ref decided it was delibrate handball, when it wasn't as he leaned to try and get the ball without his arm.

To me it looked like he tried to shift his foot out the way of James' foot, and lost his footing in the process. Not a dive but not a penalty.

Absolutely. Not a dive, not a penalty. Just a player moving at pace, gets unbalanced, goes over

Seriously I’ve heard it all now 🤣.

His left foot goes where it should do after he shifts the ball. His right foot goes miles to the right for no external reason.

There are internal reasons for this.
A) losing balance. Therefore just fall over and don’t appeal for a penalty.
B) searching for contact not finding it.
C) A dive as a result of losing balance/possesion or blatant cheating.

So the little push in the back by Kante doesn't enter the equation?

Oh and if you look back on the match thread, I was one of the first to say "no pen"

Getting booked for diving just seems to have disappeared in general now, that Traore one the other week was an outlier. They really should be showing yellows when a pen is reviewed that shows a clear dive - Kane and Son both did shameful ones a while back. There’s no consequence to diving so people will keep doing it, especially as you get a penalty for any contact at all these days as long as you fall over.
