Wolves 2-1 Chelsea: Verdict Thread

So the little push in the back by Kante doesn't enter the equation?

Oh and if you look back on the match thread, I was one of the first to say "no pen"
Well no as it was ages before, he takes several strides afterwards, was minimal.

I believe VAR doesn't have the remit of awarding yellow cards retrospectively for a dive so Atwell's hands were tied to changing the pen decision only.

It does - either that or whichever ref it was made an error last season as he booked Almiron after a VAR review.

Elsewhere our good friend David Coote sent Benteke off last night for what at worst were two routine aerial fouls. The standard is atrocious, I have no idea how idiots like him and Bankes are involved at this level.

I’ve watched it again. He shifts it with his left and then tries to shift it back with his right to go round Zouma but misses the ball.

That’s a perfectly legitimate reason to fall to the ground/ lose balance. But not let your legs give way and appeal for a penalty.

Neto is convinced he has been touched though. His reaction after it was overturned says a lot. Not the usual sheepish look or grumble to themselves that players give when they know the truth, he was genuinly amazed nd angry it was overturned.

Possibly doubling down on it to prevent a booking / avoid embarrassment.

Same as when strikers try and scream a ball took a deflection for a corner when they miss a sitter.

yeah, not a pen..like coady the other week..doesnt matter though. We won!

He dives, lads.

If that's an opposition player doing it to us, we're all calling him a "cheating cunt". Not sure why there's a debate over it.
Just football innit.

Be boring if everyone just accepted something and we moved on. Wasn't a penalty so the right decision was given but you have to ask why refs are not or not allowed to book players if they think they have seen a dive. Wasn't even a word from the ref to Neto about it

Getting booked for diving just seems to have disappeared in general now, that Traore one the other week was an outlier. They really should be showing yellows when a pen is reviewed that shows a clear dive - Kane and Son both did shameful ones a while back. There’s no consequence to diving so people will keep doing it, especially as you get a penalty for any contact at all these days as long as you fall over.

#CONSISTENCY

Given Chelsea got a free kick for a dive at their place last season I'm not too fussed.

I just wished we were better at the gamesmanship side of the game

If you watched the incident in real time it did look as if Neto's foot was stood on bringing him down so can see why Atwell initially gave it.

Watching on the slo mo you can see that it isn't so right to rescind - was close enough to Neto to unbalance him so don't believe it was a definate deliberate dive either.

In the end the correct decisions made which is surely what we all want.

He didn't give a free kick to Chelsea, he dropped the ball at Mendy's feet, so presumably as he didn't give an offence against Neto, how could he book him?

Whenever a player runs at pace into a crowded penalty area my cynical first thought is that he is looking for a penalty, and that is exactly what I thought with Neto. No different to Grealish, Salah, Kane, etc. Or Franny Lee in the 70's.
It will be interesting to see if/when it next happens with Neto - the sooner it happens again the more likely that he is consciously diving or trying to initiate contact..

tbf to Neto, I've no recollection of him diving before apart from early on in his time here, Nuno subbed him straight away and was not happy, pretty sure he got a bollocking

Realistically there's no point in running into the penalty area slowly - you will just get tackled or blocked off

What you are trying to do is detabilise their defence - a touch could well take you down - doesn't mean it's a dive or a penalty.
