One thing I do know Is that Jeff Hendrick certainly didn’t mean to put it in off the post. He probably tried to put it in the other corner.

I'll give you a thought. The first 3 games we played with a certain style, the last 4 we haven't. In between that was the transfer window closing. Did Bruno play the first 3 games thinking this is my identity, we will live with the growing pains knowing we'll put another couple of players in, but I've drilled the rest of the team and then abondon it when Jeff let him down for one that would get the best out of what he had?
That's a great question!

Maybe the high press style relies on the midfield two to get through a lot of work. Bringing in a Sanches player allows rotation without a drop off in quality, bringing in Donk reduces what our midfield can do.

Maybe the drop off has been an effort to enable Neves & Joao to play the majority of games without burning out.

Likewise, a better option at CB would theoretically mean we can be more adventurous with our WBs.

I agree with your point that he was playing in a way for the team he would have, rather than the team he had at that time.

Not getting in a CB and a CM means Lage's plans got kiboshed and he had to change the style.

In an odd kind of way, it's kind of testament to Lage to be able to switch styles so quickly and be effective.

Yeah, I doubt players would aim for that gap when the rest of the goal was gaping!

Another observation. Marcal had been taken of man marking and is now on Rauls near post duty.

Don’t think There’s a lot in the ASM / Raul incident either. ASM takes a clear unimpeded swipe at the ball which is what the linesman see’s but there is a bit of a follow through into the back of Rauls thigh but not much velocity. Don’t think him going down like he’d been shot in a WW2 film did him any favours.

I’d say the Jack Stephens challenge on Bruno Fernandes (which led to the Saints equaliser) was far more robust, but the whole footballing world said that wasn’t a foul and the new “soft touch refereeing” was good for the game.
