Wolves 3-0 Sheff Utd: FA Cup 3rd Rd - Verdict Thread

A word on Cundle and Jordao. Obviously only short cameos and the game was won but thought they both looked decent, did their defensive duties, buzzed around and Cundle especially looked to get his head up when on the ball.

So Marcal had a knock? Bruno also said he wanted to look at Donck anyway. Guess that’s Marcal out for a month now so Donck in the back 3 it is :D

I'd rather play with 4 at the back than play donk there, he's fucking shit, loses runners and is clumsy.

Donk at CB just makes me nervous.
Donk doing anything makes me nervous. He's just such a nothing player. And definitely has a mistake in him at least once a game.

He should stick to being a Jack Reacher villain.

Perhaps a point also to note that in past years this would have been a banana skin.
Sheff U ain’t no mugs and we did a premier league job on them even with our thin squad and a few changes.
We’re building some momentum, which is good to see……how many minutes is that now since we conceded a goal in open play!

Weird to recall Sanderson and then pmay Marcal CB then when he has a knock put Dendoncker there. We should definitely have had a look today.

Potentially back to cover injury during AFCON and then will be returning to brum

Wonder if Bruno was making a point to Jeff today - playing make shift CBs.

Very odd, as I mentioned earlier, he was out all through the half time period warming up, then went and collected his match shirt from the dugout....me and my lads were convinced he was coming on.

Bruno (or his team) will have seen Sanderson play CB for blues against champ opposition but probably hasn't seen donk play CB at all

We had exactly the same thought too - very rare we have players do a full warm up at half time and then not come on. Perhaps he has a knock?

Not really makeshift at all. Both Marcal and Donk have played CB before at a high level.

Marcal has played CB 22 in his entire career. 20 of them in two seasons at Lyon (1 today) , and only 8 of those were in the season before we signed him. Most of them came in the CL, so I assume that was Lyon moving to a 5 against tougher opposition and a 4 in the league. So his tactical role may have been somewhat different to what it is in our back 3.

Regardless, Lyon are one of the best teams in that league so having him in their back line isn’t the same as ours. It’s also fair to say that Ligue 1 isn’t the same calibre as the PL.

Now Sanderson has allegedly done well in the championship. I can’t see how playing makeshift CBs can be better than playing an actual CB. It’s not like he’s an untried kid, he’s played a few seasons of senior football and certainly has the required physical capabilities, which Marcal does not. Donck just doesn’t have the ability. Now if your dropping Fabinho in there then fair enough. You’d play him instead of Nat Phillips for example. But when your dropping a shit CM into a position he’s worse in then that doesn’t make sense to me.

Enjoyable day out, glad we went with a strong team.

Really good performances by Podence, Neves, Semedo. Thought Kilman had some good moments too and Fabio Silva looked very good first-half. Agree with what other people are saying on here about Traore, what a stinker of a performance. Didn't show for the ball at all, barely moved and looked completely uninterested + the usual terrible decision-making and no end product. Marcal poor too, I'd rather see Dendoncker than him at CB in a straight choice although neither is ideal.

Sheff Utd had some good chances especially to begin but weren't clinical, also thought their backline was sloppy - gave the ball away quite a few times as they did for the first goal. We pounced on a good few second balls when the defence did a poor job of getting the ball away.
