The Cricket Thread (Sponsored and loved by the Banned Bully & the Norwegian Hobbit)

Worthy of a separate thread for me. This is the ultimate series, and I love a bit of convict bashing. Lets have it all in here.

The heady days of the E&S forum in 2005, followed by its own specialist forum, followed by this place, followed by this thread. Quite the journey.

Word is that Finn will get the nod for the third seamer spot. I have absolutely no idea what Australia are planning as they have picked a squad full of not very good openers and fast bowlers who are good but break all the time.

That 2005 thread was on new mol mix I think. As I contributed to it, it must have been. Wonderful series, was it jinky who went to old Trafford for day five and couldn't get in as the gates shut at stupid o'clock?

Just such an amazingly tight and exciting summer.

The E&S shut mid-series - middle of July I think. I'm sure I was still posting on there at the time of the Edgbaston Test.

Finn should be starting. The ground will be rock hard and the extra bounce he will get will cause the Aussies major trouble

Can't wait for tomorrow, hopefully Finn gets the nod even though he hasn't been great recently he's better than Bresnan.

The argument for Bresnan would be 1) lengthens the batting and 2) can be trusted to bowl economically with the old ball should Australia win the toss, bat and bat long.

    1) is a non-argument for me, we shouldn't need that, but I can see the merits in 2).

I just wish we still had jones the bowl. Equally I am glad we don't have to rely on jones the glove any more. Duckhams was fooking rancid.

    Trescothick
    Strauss
    Vaughan
    Bell
    Pietersen
    Flintoff
    G Jones
    Giles
    Hoggard
    Harmison
    S Jones

    vs

    Cook
    Root
    Trott
    Pietersen
    Bell
    Bairstow
    Prior
    Broad
    Swann
    Anderson

    God that is tough!

Prior better than duckhams. Anderson better than hoggard. Harmison v Finn a toss up. The batting line up is incredibly tough.

Pietersen 2013 is better in my book than Pietersen 2005, but a different player.

Bell 2013 is miles better than Bell 2005.

Swann is obviously better than dear old Gilo.

I think I'd take the current team, though the 2005 outfit was more explosive with both bat and ball on its day.

Or Marcus for Bairstow and Root to six.

I wouldn't have Flintoff in a composite team, as odd as that sounds.

Incidentally Trescothick has made four successive ducks for Somerset!

I'd agree with that, the current team won't be scoring 400 in a day and we also won't ever have that satisfaction of getting the runs against the likes of Warne and McGrath but it is a better overall team.

It's actually quite embarrassing for Australia if you do the same thing.

    Hayden
    Langer
    Ponting
    Martyn
    Clarke
    Katich
    Gilchrist
    Gillespie
    Warne
    Lee
    McGrath

    vs

    Watson
    Rogers
    Cowan
    Khawaja (?)
    Clarke
    Warner (?)
    Haddin
    Siddle
    Starc
    Pattinson

Assuming that's Harmison at his peak, I couldn't disagree with that.

The composite Australian side is the entire 2005 side, unsurprisingly

I suppose Gillespie was pretty poor by then and got dropped, but his replacements in Tait/Kasprowicz weren't any better. So one seamer might get in, and Clarke is a lot better now than he was then. That's it.

Nah, damn good team but the bowlers are not quite there. And viv is way better than all the batsmen, with probably only KP getting close.

Really looking forward to the ashes. England look to have the better team, but I expect the Aussies to come very strongly at us, they are being written off by most people and will want to prove them all wrong.

    Hmmm

Greenidge better as an opener probably.
Clive Lloyd at four vs Vaughan would be a close one
Dujon v prior is an interesting debate.
Viv is the best batsman in either lineup

    Bowlers
    Holding
    Marshall
    Roberts

    Shite they are frightening!

I only saw the backend of Dujon's career but I would say Prior is streets ahead of him as both batsman and keeper.

I don't think it would. The Windies had a fantastic batting line up plus that battery of very quick bowlers. A great team
