what are you doing when this happens?

win10 has a feature that does this if your mouse is in the lower right hand corner. it's possible you might just happen to be moving the cursor there when reading something, then taking your hand off the mouse? you should be able to easily replicate this just by dragging your cursor as far right/down in to the corner as possible and leaving it for a sec, which will trigger transparency all the way to the fixtures background. once you move the mouse again, it'll bring all your previously open windows back to the foreground.

or is that not quite sounding right?

Nope... It happens when the mouse is central, it happens when I'm not touching the mouse.

I've done a windows update but how do I specifically see if there is an update for the graphics card?

The manufacturers website is the best bet for GFX card drivers.

If your graphics card was playing up I don't think you'd get any picture at all.

Like the others have said, see if you can plug it into another screen with a HDMI cable.

Do a deep scan on Malwarebytes too. Could be something dodgy trying to interfere.

There likely *is* an update, they come out pretty frequently. Updating the driver isn't generally a magic bullet but it never hurts to try. If you have integrated graphics you can get it from the manufacturer (HP, Dell, etc.) website. If you have a dedicated chip you can get it from either the AMD or Nvidia site.

Anyone know about mirroring? Whenever I mirror my laptop to my Firestick it connects immediately but the picture is all blocky, slanted and unwatchable. My TV itself has a mirroring facility, but when I try to connect directly to it, it just fails. Yes, I can just use an HDMI cable, but it really pisses me off when tech that's supposed to work doesn't.

Crappy WiFi connection most likely. Cable is probably the only solution (either ethernet or hdmi).

pretty much. bad wireless connection seems likely.

what do you mean by slanted? that's a weird one, like the picture looks like a parellelogram or something?

maybe you could try lowering your resolution and seeing if that helps any, that's a frequent problem with projectors... mirroring is normally smarter than that though.

Yeah, exactly that. It's like the picture has been cut into a dozen or so horizontal slices and then reassembled with each slice half an inch to the right of the one above it.

I don't think it's the wi-fi on the TV, because the Firestick connects in milliseconds and there's no problem with any of the catch-up services.

this might be a dumb question, but have you googled "mirroring problems" with your specific devices? there are a lot of things that "just work", that don't. I've seen a lot of really weird issues over the years with random bugs or incompatibilities in specific circumstances (X and Y hardware, over Z network, with ABC software, etc.) that are more widespread than you'd think. maybe you'll find some information or workarounds?

I would still play around with the resolution though, just to eliminate/confirm it as the problem.

Yeah, I always google first. Found someone with the same blocky problem but no solution, unfortunately. Annoying thing is, once in a blue moon it will display OK/connect to the TV, but only after so much messing about that I've missed half of what I was trying to watch.

Have you got another TV you could try the Firestick in, see if the same thing happens?

Yeah, same thing happens, so it must be the firestick at fault in this case. It restarts itself after about thirty seconds of failing to mirror properly, too.

Or it still could be the WiFi. Just a case of elimination. Can you try it at a mates house or work etc?

Well, what about if I stick the TV next to the router. Wi-fi should be good enough then, no?

In theory, yes. But it's always good to eliminate potential causes entirely.

If the router and TV are together, is there an ethernet port on the telly?

No, the one with a port is in another room. It's just a little portable I could get near the router.

So, I had to change the Wifi-Channel of the tablets and laptops etc because he home phones were interfering. I haven't used the home Wifi printer for months and now it my laptop won't connect (haven't tried the tablets). Could changing Wifi channel be the issue?

I've tried to use Win 10 troubleshooter but it says that I need to turn the printer on (it's already on) and that the printer is offline.

    Any ideas?

I had that issue when we get Fibre installed. I had to set up the printer on the new wifi network all over again. Pain in the hole.
