Obviously didn't go back far enough on your Transfermarkt search.

If you do your math properly you can see that Jonny has spent the large majority of his career playing on the left side of defense.

But don't let those stats stop you.

To be fair, I did say "at a push"

In a back three Boly, Coady and Bennett shits on anything the B6 massive has, no matter what Gareth Southgate thinks.

And I wouldn't even consider any of their players ahead of ours further forward.

So basically, the combined XI is

Rui, Jonny, Boly, Coady, Bennett, Doherty, Neves, Moutinho, Jota, Jiminez, Traore.

    Simple as that.

That doesnít make him left sided...

Denis Irwin hardly ever played at RB for United after around 1995 when G-Nev came fully through. In fact didn't play there *that* often even before that as Paul Parker was still around.

Was still right sided though, regardless of whether he was an excellent LB too (well, he was for United. Not for us as he was 74)

Are people denying that Jonny plays on the left for us?

I hadn't read the article properly (I genuinely did close it down earlier when I saw Heaton in nets) but looking now that's what the piece chucks in as a throwaway comment - sort of "he's doing really well for Wolves especially as he's a right sided player but he's used on the left".

He's neither right sided nor left sided, he's both.

Whereas you would say Adama is purely right sided, even if we have occasionally used him on the left (we did at Brighton last season and he was shite).

I haven’t read the article (and don’t intend to) but I think Alan’s point is that he plays on the left for us and has done most of his career too.

He will stay on the left for us too by the look of it. When he arrived I saw possibilities of Vinagre left, and Jonny right.

And then Matt Doherty transformed into an absolute Premier League beast.

Thing is though you wouldn't view Jonny as playing out of position last week when Doc went off and we brought Vinagre on to play on the left...

He does play on the left for us 90%+ of the time but he's still also a right sided player even if we don't often use that option.

No Iím arguing that Alan feels Jonny canít be used as a right back because heís played the majority of his career on the left (this doesnít make him left sided and not right).

In his last few seasons heís been in a situation where heís been needed on the left. But Iím sure if Jonny was given the choice heíd rather play on the right.

When he played for Spain he was played as a RB

Well he played on the right. Not quite sure where they played him in the game v England. He was like a RWB in a 4 man defence.

Jonny is a very capable fullback & suspect that wherever he has played most of the time that he is perfectly able to play on either side of the defence.

The discussion is therefore fairly pointless.

I’d agree with that. But seems odd people getting bent out of shape for Alan suggesting someone who has played most of his career on the left is a left sided player. Not sure what there is to get so upset and cry about

The article basically paints it like Jonny is being put at a disadvantage in our system because he's "right sided" but plays in the left for us.

Except he has played on the left for years now, including at Celta Vigo. IMO just because he is right footed and clearly competent on the right side of defense does not mean it's some weird tactical shenanigan to play him on the left like we do. It's where he's almost always played FFS!

It was more as a point about Hatfield clearly not doing enough research into the players he was writing about.

Jonny is ďdisadvantagedĒ playing on the left IMO. Even if itís only 1% heíd be better on the right. I donít care how many games heís played now as a LB/LWB and how well he does it. Heís a right sided player who can also play on the left.

To be fair I shouldn't be arguing this point, I mean I should take example from career left backs such as Phil Neville and Fabian Delph.

So did Phil Neville. But don't let your Transfermarkt look up stop you.

I'm not actually sure what the argument is really about. Jonny is disadvantaged by 1% on the left. With Matt and Adama as the right wing, the TEAM is advantaged by a lot larger percentage. It's about the team, not the individual.
