Greatest World Test Cricket XI (1978 to 2020)

    As per the England Thread.

    2 openers
    Positions 3-5
    1 all rounder
    1 keeper
    1 spinner
    3 quicks

You can have a keeper/batsman if you wish and an all rounder as one of the quicks/spinner if you want.

First vote for the openers - four picks with placings getting 4, 3, 2 or 1 point. The keeper will be next so that it does not interfere with the batsmen's vote.
    5 Picks for the batsmen
3 Picks for the all rounder
    3 Picks for the keeper
    3 Picks for the spinner
    5 Picks for the quicks

Can we not pick a captain first? That way we get the best world skipper?
    Carole Baskin is to blame.

Nah. Get the team sorted first. So many interesting skipper possibilities but no guarantee they get in the team (Border for example)

The great West Indies fast bowling attacks of the 70s and 80s had one player that tamed them. Gavaskar - he averaged 70 against them. I appreciate that most of you wouldn't have seen him play and would have heard about his 30 something not out off of 60 overs in the world cup!

We not doing a specialist #3 for this then? Ok, no worries.

    Ricky Ponting
    Brian Lara
    Kumar Sangakkara
    Sachin Tendulkar
    Steve Smith

That's just ridiculous. Plus all the players I've left out (Kallis missing as I'll save him for the all-rounder rather than waste him here).

May I just point out that Kumar Sangakkara played 86 Tests as a specialist batsman and averaged nearly 67. The man was a genius.

If he's not near your top five then I don't know what to say.

I'm going to be annoyed if there's some kind of fudge and he gets in as keeper (where he averaged 40 but there are better options).

Bloody hell. It's almost an impossible decision. So much talent to pick from.

Don't get the bit about not picking Sanga as a keeper, which I will. There are better keepers, not that he wasn't test standard, but you are picking on overall contribution, and assuming there's nothing stopping him batting as well as he can just because he's keeping. Similar with Kallis as an all-rounder. You pick him based on his potential contribution with bat and ball.

Gilchrist only ever played as a keeper and averaged 47 so Sanga is never getting in there.

He does however beat everyone else as a batsman. Even Adam Voges with his freak figures.

    63.61 away
62.00 "neutral" (basically Pakistan in the UAE)
