Worst of all, he left out the Oxford comma!

I used the Oxford comma a lot in my previous life. Lawyers love it.

    Thanks guys.

To think I've not been able to motivate myself to write for ages and all it took was Tim to write a terrible article and I had to prove I could do better without really trying. Thanks Tim.

Yes, but spite without capability equals disaster. Dan's piece is brilliant and well-written.

    You're very kind

It's not really just spite, I'm only jesting. I did need a kick up the arse though and that was it.

I do think I'm a better writer than Tim but I would say that.

I only used the word 'spite' to connect my comment to Pablo's. I'm a writer too (just finishing my 12th book in my late 70s) and I call it pride (not arrogance) in performance. The point I was making is that pride or drive in itself is not enough. In addition to a bit of luck, writers have to have creative ability and you have it in spades!

Your exchange recently with TT made me realize how closely I'm still connected to the West Midlands. My mother was born in the Lozells area of Birmingham in the shadow of Villa Park and my father was born in Handsworth in the shadow of the Hawthorns. He was always a Baggies supporter but the family moved to Wolverhampton (Wednesfield, Staffs in those days) in 1946 and I found my lifelong love of Wolves in 1953. I've had only two occasions when I temporarily switched my allegiance. In 1954 I joined my Dad in supporting WBA beat Preston in the Cup Final and 1957 I joined my Mom in supporting Villa beat Man Utd in the Cup Final. In 1960, I took my Dad to Wembley to watch Wolves defeat Blackburn 3-0.

There are so many stories like that from then. People going to the Baggies if Wolves were away. Seems unnatural in the current climate but I sort of like the echo from maybe more innocent times before tribalism became pretty ugly in the late sixties and early seventies. As a man of 48 years old I couldn’t imagine supporting the Albion in any way bar putting some pennies in the pot if they were in danger of going pop. Returning the favour some of their fans did in our darkest days.
