New - The things that really annoy you

Let's just say I will be delighted to have a car again from Tuesday.
Prefer the 3 hour+ drive home

Bookmarking this for 2 months time after a 4 hour drive home.

GPF on my Sportage, got to take it in next Friday to get it cleaned.
Dealership tell me I should be bombing up and down the Motorway every other day.
Well you can fuck off with that.

It’s a bit misleading but the dealer is speaking part truth and part fudging the issue.

‘Some’ of the particles get burned off as part of the regeneration cycle, so a longer, hotter, higher rpm journey will burn off more, and slower, colder stop-starts will see them build up. Eventually they build up too high, trip the warning lights and off you have to trot to the dealer.

They are right that the motorway-type journeys help, but are not the panacea - the net result is always an increase so you’re just delaying the inevitable - the things clog eventually anyway.

I’ve had several vans (DPF) which have been mostly motorway use with very few stop-start journeys, so essentially ideal conditions, and the filters have always blocked and needed work eventually. That repair costs a fair whack too.

That is something the EV guys never have to worry about to be fair.

I’ve been doing a lot of research into the petrol engine exhaust regeneration filter and it should be ok even on frequent short journeys, I just think new petrol cars are being over engineered to meet emissions regulations.

Crewe - Manc.
Manc- Leeds
Leeds - Kirkstall Forge

Then a couple to get to and from the office to Leeds for the Hotel.

Then the 3 train journey home.

Saved myself extra trains yesterday by travelling up in the evening and not doing the extra Kirkstall Forge back and forth
2 trains to leeds plus 1 to the local destination? Seems reasonable to me.

There aren't any direct trains to leeds from the west coast mainline IIRC.

I wasn't moaning about the number of trains required just that 1 company messed up the journey, despite only using them once.

Northern, Transpennine and another I can't recall the name of other than being Welsh were all spot on.

Ah, with you. Enjoy your M6, M60, M62, M621 slog.

I don't mind it to be honest. Few hours of no one bothering me is bliss.

Miss a big chunk of the traffic driving home by cutting across to the M56 and then the bypass to rejoin M6 at J19.

Drive up is generally straight forward just the final few miles where I hit the traffic.

I used to do leeds to Stone to leeds about 20 years ago and it was shite then. Have they improved the A556 through to the M56?

Yep. The bypass so you don't have to drive through the villages is great. Just flows between the 2 motorways.

Well the noose has been tightening for a long time and there’s no doubt complications (aka expensive repairs) arise from that.

The next push is coming from safety regulations which will affect all cars and will negatively impact the way we use and enjoy our cars. The next generation of drivers is going to have a very robotic driving experience unfortunately. No doubt safer and more environmentally friendly, but nowhere near the freedom and fun.

Just want to add here; port-injected engines don’t get hot enough to scour the buildup even under high load (although they can get to a range that slows buildup). Direct-injected engines actually get more buildup at high RPMs.

Maybe the “Italian Tune-up” worked once upon a time, but seems not to in modern combustion engines.

YMMV (forgive the pun).

Don't some cars now dump some extra fuel into the cycle to boost temperatures for the regeneration?

Yeah, I’ve been quoted £190 for the fix and when I pick it up I’m gonna ask a lot of questions before I pay up.
I’m retired, I do about 4 or 5 long journeys a year, I shouldn’t be penalised for wanting a decent car but only doing short journeys.

Problem is there are a lot of people that think you should be penalised for wanting a decent car but only doing short journeys. Or any car and only doing short journeys. Or any car.

That band of people is growing and have an awful lot of sway so I think we’re swimming against a tide that isn’t going back.

I got a bit of a shock moving here, the anti-car movement is fierce despite the noises made by some around Ulez. Cars seem to be hated by the young who are the most environmentally conscious, hated because they are symbolic of social inequality, and further fuelled by resentment of anyone unable to afford one who would if they could.

That vocal band also have superb transport links and can get about the metropolis fairly easily without any hassle or even need for a car, which is why the likes of Ulez and 20 mph roll-outs and Low traffic zones are extremely popular.

Thing is of course, that’s typically London centric and those people do have a habit of thinking they are speaking for everyone else.

Anyway, I’m transitioning to acceptance and will roll with the punches, but the days of doing what you want when you want are coming to an end I’m afraid.

I dunno, driving a car fast is pretty fun whether it's being towed by Zeus' lightning or a chariot of little explosions.
