SPOTY

It's of a different age, was quite nice 30 years ago to see all the sporting highlights of the year in one place, especially when on a Sunday night Harry Secombe's God bothering was the alternative.

None of that applies now.

Felt more authentic when you voted by postcard. Now they shape who they want to win based on the focus the person gets / give them that because of bookies odds. Here's a 10 minute section on person x last of all, the phone lines open now.

Plus BBC have the rights to so little of the action. A succession of still shots doesn’t exactly make great tv.

Will be some action from the World Cup obvs but I doubt Messi will exactly be interviewed about his little award which I imagine is such a huge thing for him as he probably doesn’t even know what the BBC is.

A section that they always do well is looking back at the sporting figures who have sadly passed away in the year to some sombre music.

It was better when it was a sporting review rather than primarily being focussed on the nominees.

I haven't watched it in years. It's become essentially meaningless.

It used to have six nations footage (all of it), other rugby, grand national, British Grand Prix, open golf, masters etc etc

Has none of them now.

And the theme tunes, all of them were great. Even sports I don't really like such as Rugby Union and Skiing had great theme tunes.

I think Ski Sunday still exists, but the coverage is very flimsy compared to the comprehensive coverage that Eurosport can offer so its become pointless rather than essential viewing.

Banging tune though.

Had to Google 4 of them. Only knew stokes and Osullivan. Probably says more about my sporting knowledge but previously I was at least aware of the existence of people on the shortlist.
