Wolves 2-3 West Ham: Verdict Thread

8 to go...

But my word, that defending. I hope Mout has them tomorrow and does a special "taking one for the team" training session. 50 yards from goal, kick them just like they did to us twice and take the card.

We must sort out the defence frailties before Friday, If we attack Fulham we might get a result ,but confidence needs boosting. Will we be lookiing over our shoulder after Friday ? Hope not, and will Silvas confidence arrive after that well taken goal ? If Harry Kane had scored that everyone would be raving about it.

Much better on the ball but there's still a real issue with our approach to games that comes from the manager and it's got to be sorted out but part of me doesn't think he's able to. There's small little niggly things like switching Traore to the right at the start of the second half that make me think the bigger problems won't be sorted as they haven't so far this season. We're naive, weak and poorly set up without the ball and that comes again from the manager. It's a recurring issue that's been there all season no matter who has played and what formation we play and i think it's doing the players a disservice. Yes some need improving but they aren't as bad imo as they are being made to look within our setups. I understand it's hard and i want him to turn it around but i still feel Nuno and his coaching staff are the biggest problem at the moment even with the tons of issues we've had.

It’s incredibly arrogant, as Wolves supporters, to get all moany about finishing 7th twice and saying it’s not good enough and we need to improve. Small incremental improvements would have seen us improve. This rush to we must play a 4 - at very best it will need a whole new load of players & hopefully an 8th place finish; and most likely will lead to an eventual relegation.
It doesn’t need to be a 4, it doesn’t need to be a 5. It’s HOW you play.

I'm surprised you watched it! Thought you'd have been binge-watching Last of the Summer Wine or something on Britbox instead! 😉

Yeah I don’t think we can read too much into the way we defended in the second half. West Ham weren’t really interested in attacking us after the break.

Nuno can’t really win though can he with the players he has. Carry on playing a back four and we will keep conceding goals and losing plenty of games of football.....or shithouse our way to the end of the season playing five at the back while we all die of boredom.

Man, that championship winning season feels like fucking eons ago! A time when Nuno seemed to always have all the answers.

And didnt we miss Johnny and Boly, but at least we didnt lie down and die, im disappointed though.

I never expected to get close to 7th this season for a variety of reasons. I didn’t expect us to play so poorly on so many occasions either. I’d love to see us go to a 4 but can see that too many of the existing players are not suited to it. You can’t make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear so either we invest in some silk or stick with what we’ve got and get the best out of them.

By some accounts it was the nature of the defeat to Sevila that prompted Nuno to think about changing his approach to increase possession. It’s quite ironic as the prospects of facing Sevilla in the near future are remote to say the least.

Finished that in the break...

I watch, I get annoyed etc etc then get back to watching classic TV and wishing it was the end of May

Weird, weird game. Rarely do we ever create so many chances and get so many players forward. And yet we manage to make someone so patently average as Lingard look like Mbappé. You can't have teams just running straight down the middle of the pitch and looking like scoring every time. Long term, this might be the shape for us but at the moment we don't have the players.

Patricio: No chance on the first two but he has to be saving the third, whatever the sins in front of him were. Had Soucek's goal counted, he'd also have fingers pointed at him there.

Semedo: Not a great night. Done too easily on the second goal, got forward ok but then delivered nothing.

Coady: Didn't get across quickly enough after Semedo was beaten on the second, always vulnerable when he's being run at directly. I don't think he can play in a four, regardless of partner.

Saiss: Didn't do enough on the first goal, sluggish for much of the night.

Ait-Nouri: Did fine. Not really troubled defensively, unlucky not to score (Fabianski was getting nowhere near) and some other good contributions going forward. That's his shirt for a while now, don't be fudging it and putting Saiss/Kilman there.

Dendoncker: He scored! But didn't do much else right. Got to be taking a yellow on the first goal, had our only real chance after it went 2-3 and blazed it miles over.

Neves: Below par by his standards, harsh booking. Was more or less carrying midfield on his own though.

Traore: Struggled to get into the game at times but what a run for the first goal. Top cross on his left foot too.

Podence: Tried to get involved at all times, but not much came off for him. Wouldn't have started if we weren't ravaged by injuries/Covid, think 45 minutes was the most he could do.

Neto: Shocking miss, never hid, always looked dangerous, great pass for Fabio's goal.

José: Dogshit pie with catshit pastry. Fucking shit. Can't run, head or shoot. Penalty box presence of Jake Cassidy. Terrible miss. Attacks nothing, still hides all the time. Don't pick him again.

Fabio: Great touch and finish for his goal. Will do him a lot of good. He'll always get in the positions, he'll come good.

Vitinha: Busy but not much to show for it.

We kept going, it was entertaining and there's bits and pieces to work with there. We're caught between two stones at the moment though, we go four at the back and we always look like conceding, we go five and we never look like scoring. So that's a puzzle Nuno and Jeff need to solve in the next 4-5 months.

Eh

From Spiers:

Last 5 games playing 343 Scored 3 Conceded 6

Last 5 games playing 4231 Scored 10 Conceded 12

We are just to nice, we should have fouled them on the break like they did to us so many times.

On all 3 goals we should have took the foul

Yep. And HOW we play with 4 at the back is defensively horrendous.
Play it differently then!

How we play in a 5 has been consistently offensively horrendous and defensively horrendous when we’re not playing a back 7 (we should have conceded 8 in the reverse fixture).

Play the fucking 5 differently! We haven’t, we don’t, the 4 has shown promise.

There’s more to football than what some numbers on a piece of paper say.
