We really should be winning that game, we had enough chances. Mike Dean makes a horrendous decision to gift them possession but Semedo gets caught out on the turn. He didn't really challenge McGinn but still managed to make contact and they are always going to hit the deck in that situation and its cost us.

Not sure the formation really worked today, with Podence being the best player on the pitch.

Only caught the last half hour of the game. Seemed very... Mid table.

We had some good chances in that period though, Silva off the post, Dendoncker hitting it straight at the keeper (again).

Stupid goal to give away, Moutinho careless in possession and then Semedo just gets skinned.

Hard to tell if Moutinho actually touches the guy for his second yellow. Regardless, it's a shit decision.

Desperately need a centre forward in January (assuming we don't see Raul much before end of season). Someone with a presence who puts himself about a bit such as Mitrovic or Murray of a few seasons ago. Any thoughts ?

Let's start with a positive. We had 16 shots of goal and 7 on target and Martinez in goal was there man of the match. Defensively Nelson has had a brain fart and given that prick Mike Dean the chance to give yet another injury time penalty against us. He doesn't like wolves right backs does he. I thought Mike Dean had an absolute shocker handing out yellow cards left right and centre to both sides! I don't think 3 or 4 of those cards were actually worthy of a yellow. Grealish was probably the worst foul and he got his yellow. Silva battled upfront but has neither the nous or the strength to lead a line in the Premier League at the moment. That has been said several times.PodenceWas awesome! We are in trouble if we create and don't score yet can't keep a clean sheet. We need two or three signings in January

It’s a really disapointing result. I felt we were the better team, but were never in control.

villas only tactic is falling over, and then hoping to do something with a set piece, I don’t know how their fans can enjoy that. I don’t know how their players can enjoy it either.

the dive before moutinho got sent off was awful, and there’s no way Dein should have fallen for it.

having said that - it was a penalty, Semedo was ok today despite all the people moaning about him - but he made a huge error there.

Coady and Saiss were good, but never really in control of watkins. Marcal would have given a penalty away if their guy wasn’t narrowly offside but was otherwise ok.

Donk was ok - made a few tackles and won some headers, but didn’t dominate at all - and he should have scored his chance, was an awful miss.

joao was ok without really creating much.

pod and Neto were ok, not amazing but oK.

Traore created some reallly good opportunities, but when he wasn’t involved didn’t do much at all.

silva linked play well and was unlucky when his shot hit the post, but was completely dominated by their centre halves in the air, he needs to hit the weights.

our set pieces were awful. I don’t know who comes up with our set pieces plays but they need to do better, they were terrible.

overall it’s a disapointing result, but whilst we didn’t deserve to lose, we didn’t play well enough to be able to argue we were really unlucky.

I can’t think of any manager who has less faith in the options on their bench than Nuno. Was extremely surprised to see Traore finish the game on the pitch given he looked increasingly out of ideas at 70 onwards.

EDIT - and Traore looked extremely hot headed all game and could easily have got a second yellow

I know Semedo is gonna get slaughtered on here, but he was bought as a wing back and not a right back in a flat four. Bit like Ait-Nouri.
We weren’t that bad at the back, we just haven’t got any goals in us.
Our front four have got to be the most toothless attack in the football league.
Always gonna be tough when you can’t score goals but give them away cheaply.

We always run least in the PL, that’s Nuno’s system. It’s why we’re traditionally better in the second half.

same problem as have been there for years now. laborious build up, terrible from all dead ball situations, poor finishing. gotta say it sure seems like a coaching/system problem.

I'm as big a neto/podence/etc fan as anyone, but all this "cleverness" doesn't do us any good if it doesn't add to the scoresheet. we don't get goals from anywhere else. not defender headers, not midfielders either from free kicks or open play (looking at you donk and neves)... need goals from the people there to score goals.

semedo... woof. pointless foul to lose the game. mugged numerous times before. if the plan was to transition to a back 4 why in the hell did we buy him?

I thought silva had some good looks, had several really good build ups just to get fouled. closest to scoring. podence the lever in a lot of attacks but didn't get us anywhere.

Four attacking players too isolated from rest of the team so losing a defender made no difference to our ability to keep possession. Podence did well, thought Silva and Neto were ok but nowhere near enough from Traore.

We never looked particularly comfortable at the back and Semedo looks more like a signing from Barking than Barca who must be laughing their socks off at what we paid.

Whilst their keeper was justifiably MOTM he’d have been very disappointed to let any of the shots he saved in.

Time to return Traore to bench so we have an option to bring on up front and get Vitinha on from start.

Should have had the game killed off comfortably, but we're utterly hapless in front of goal. Donck should score both of his, Fabio should score and Adama making the wrong decisions when we had overloads on.

Absolute idiocy from Nelson - not at all convinced. He's got no idea 1v1.Can't wait for Jonny to be back, he's absolutely different class and of all our defenders is perfectly suited to playing in a four.

He was, but he’s a professional footballer we paid THIRTY MILLION POUNDS for. He shouldn’t look “Sunday League at times”. He’s been done by John McGinn the midfield plodder not Grealish/Son/Rashford etc.

We played well. Any other day the Silva and Dendoncker chances go in. Silva had a cracking game linking up with team mates and making space.

I can't remember Rui making a save and Martinez got MOTM. Says it all.
