Equally sneering at people for being thick doesn't help. I don't think you do this but there are a few on here who do.

The way some people express themselves is poor and they have been directed by people like Farage to blame scapegoats - that doesn't change the fact though that austerity has massively harmed a very large section of our society and their inarticulateness has led many to mock them.

Yep, the sneering just further entrenches people, as does calling them racist- even if they clearly are, pretty much no one in history admits to being racist, it doesn't help, it should, but it doesnt.

It sometimes feels on here that anyone slightly right wing politically is demonised. I rarely agree with right wing policies but I can engage with those people and even quite like some of them.

I struggle with the latter, the damage they have done to this country in the last 10 years is immense. I can respect them and get along but they have to be someone exceptional for me to like them.

It does happen though, my old boss in the US is a lovely guy, one of the nicest people I have ever met, he is also very firmly Republican.

I guess it's down to degrees, maybe someone I see as only very slightly right of centre, others will judge them harsher (same in the other direction)
