Cost of Living

I’m looking at going back to bus driving (and I hated bus driving) the wages are around £14ph and Halfords are being wankers and cutting hours, I’ve had two weeks of 12 hours work, next week I’ve got 15, don’t even pay my rent let alone anything else, plus a couple of times there’s only been 2 of us in store from 3-8pm, 1 lad covering auto and fitting, and me on bike hut and covering the rest of the store when other lads doing fittings, piss poor way of running a store
 
Perhaps I can go someway to offer your readers suffering in these difficult financial times some comfort by explaining just a few simple cutbacks that may save them as it has for us.

We have always holidayed abroad 4 times a year but this year we are only taking 3 this year as we will not be visiting our cottage in Switzerland for 2 weeks in the summer and instead take the rental income.

Further we have cut our gardeners hours down from 36 to 34.

To think people say we cannot relate or are out of touch.

Have the government done anything yet? Other than the loan that isn't a loan?
 
Might as well be £28k now for all my ability to pay anything. Every payment bouncing all over the place. I can't afford to buy food. Got my universal credit for the month in on one day and Severn Trent and British Gas nabbed the entire lot. Then my phone bill bounced and the bank charged me for that too. Great. And still no food.

What's the fucking point in even trying to carry on.

Fucking nightmare. I can relate in many ways....financial anxiety means half the time I don't even open the post because I know what's in there...with the resulting consequences. Really hope things turn around for you quickly
 
Mate serviced mine the other month and put it on eco mode. Didn’t even know what it was before then. Takes ages to actually get hot water through the shower but with water being free it’s not a big issue if it’s saving loads.

Nah, I just did a whole discussion thing last week about how people do not value water and you kinda made my point. Might include you in my next one :)

Really sorry to hear this Pad. Went through similar situation about 12 years ago where everything was financial hell. Really hoping things sort themselves for you, reach out to people who may help, CAB are a good place to start. 🤞🤞

It is wrong that we have a system whereby half the country can use what they want, when they want for no extra charge and the other half have to be careful.

True, though if you have a meter most will usually pay less than those on RV.
 
first thing we did moving into our house was have a water meter fitted! the savings for us are massive!
petrol proces are continuing to climb though, and that feeds into all sorts of other costs.
 
We recently had a water meter fitted, going on what my sons family use, we should be quids in. Our bill for next year with rateable value was £560, hoping its going to be not much more than half that with the meter
 
As long as you’re not a flipping idiot a meter should always be cheaper. The prices are literally designed to make it so - water utilities are the only private companies with the explicit aim to make sure you use less of their product.
 
Hit the limit on the petrol pump today. Tesco set at £99, didn't even fill the tank.
 
Saw a tiny little independent petrol station in the middle of nowhere in Devon yesterday that was over £2 per litre for both petrol and diesel. Can't imagine they pick up much trade when pretty much every supermarket I passed down that way was 20p or so cheaper per litre.

Just got rid of my van as costs had escalated to the point margins were evaporating to nothing. Lifestyle changes were at least moving in that direction anyway that softened the blow somewhat. Honestly don’t know how some people stay afloat, the race to the bottom is unreal.

Would like to have just kept the van as they are so handy for just knocking about, but here is the last tank of fuel bought on 25th May that tipped the scales.

Enough is enough, fuck that:
