A game for experimentation seemingly, and also a wry nod to Jeff to look what we potentially have to work with next season in defence.

Unfortunately you can't pair Sarabia and Guedes together in attack as they're both powder puff players who are very inconsistent, and that showed.

And you can't leave Gomes out and leave Andre so isolated by playing an attacking player alongside him. We definitely need another DM next season even if neither of the main two leave. Doyle and Traore aren't good enough for that role.

Nice to score a couple of set-piece goals but the defending let us down at the other end with the changes.

What experimentation?

Bit of a nightmare fixture for us really, they were bound to be up for a game that in any other season would have been played like a pre-season game. They looked dangerous and direct every time they went forwards, we have Guedes and Sarabia playing in attacking positions for us, so the complete opposite. Important that we get a performance and result on Sunday, don't want to be ending the season with four defeats on the spin.

Both disappointed and surprised to be honest, haven’t seen the game but given the Coach’s bullish persona and him often talking about always playing the strongest team, such an abject surrender in the penultimate match of the season was strange.

We seem to be reverting to the mean now the pressure is off. Letting that Palace starting XI put four past us is not an encouraging sign.

I’m a fan of Vitor. I’m grateful for the job he’s done in completely turning our season around. The “first the points, then the pints” stuff was fun while it lasted. And he deserves a shot next season from the off to see how it goes. But with all that said, I’m disappointed with the way we seemingly threw tonight. There was no need for us to change that many players - and we all knew Palace were likely there for the taking if we wanted it enough.

We all know Guedes & Sarabia aren’t good enough to start games of football in the PL. Djiga is a complete unknown. Messing around with the central midfield. I appreciate he doesn’t have the biggest squad in the world, but we had an opportunity to secure 14th tonight and we fucked it. Sod the whole “message to Jeff” stuff - go and win the bloody game.

It’s hard for me to be too angry with the players. Particularly the ones mentioned above, we know what they are. I was really disappointed with Rodrigo’s input tonight but the main blame’s got to sit with Vitor for me.

As I said in the matchday thread, you might as well punt your mortgages on us finishing below Utd & Spurs. What a pissy fizzling load of shite way to end the season when we could have taken some real momentum into the summer.

Just got home from work so haven't been able to watch the game tonight, had to listen to Burrows and Thompson, Christ those pair are awful.

Sounds like a lot of experimentation plus a ridiculous situation where we have to play our 3rd choice keeper because our 1st always misses random games and our 2nd isn't good enough/doesn't want to be here/has a tummy bug. We could do with that position not being such a problem next year with the amount of upheaval it looks like we're going to have in the summer.

Doesn't sound like Rodrigo or Djiga did themselves any favours unfortunately. Rodrigo I'm hopeful with another good pre season will be a useful player for us next year, Djiga seems like a bit more of a worry.

Massive summer coming up but I seem to say that every summer recently. I'm way more optimistic now we've got Vítor in charge but we need to actually back him now, we've made massive sales in the last 3 summers and it looks like we're going to have massive incomings again, with multiple positions to fill. There shouldn't be any excuse. You know there will be though.

I replied to Dire on the other thread re the 6 game run, but relevant here

I think there's a lot in this. It's not taking anything away from those results, they were much needed, but we've been outclassed by Brighton and a Palace side that were there for the taking with a similar side to come on Sunday. We're not in that middle third of teams even with Vitor, we are in the bottom one with our best player about to walk.

I think perspective is needed, both on where we were at Xmas and how great it is that relegation was staved off relatively early, but the reality of where we are now which is starting next season hoping for 17th again without a very good transfer window.

Biggest disappointment for me was Rodrigo, didn't look close. Djiga also miles off. Other fringe players told us what we already knew.

I think with Mosquera, Agbadou and Toti at the back, J.Gomes and Andre and midfield and a really good number 9 in Strand Larsen we have a good spine to build around but the rest does need fleshing out with quality and obviously you live and die by that recruitment. There are concerns but I am more hopeful than I've been in other Summers. I am assuming Semedo, Cunha and probably RAN will go from the first 11, we definitely can't afford to part with any more important first team players or we will be in trouble.

Is anybody shocked especially with that line up?
It’s no surprise that we’re poor once we venture outside our best 11. Numerous players invloved tonight clearly not good enough at this level.
This is under Fosun now and coming around 14th is probably as good as we can expect. It’s a managed decline that has seen us fall this far back to a point that we are a big distance behind the likes of Palace.
The 6 wins well we downed 3 teams not good enough, 3 who are poor and 2 of which had other priorities. Look we did our job it’s probably what side in our position does.
It’s all on the summer recruiting and it’s got to be better.
PS matty & Jeff just hold your horses a few months longer before dishing out nice big contracts to the head coach.

Not having that, 6 changes, didn't start their best 5 of their best 7 players and on the lash until the early hours of Sunday morning at the very least. A game there for the winning, a combination of the team selection, individual errors and a touch of luck meant we didn't. Palace would have lost that game tonight to ¾ of the PL.

Not having what? That was my view in the build up to the game, that's how I felt during the game and how I feel now.

As the old saying goes: he who doth fuck around, doth findeth out

Too many shit players had too many minutes. We don't have anything approaching the depth to 'experiment' like that. I'm hoping it was just a message to Shi rather than a sign that the good run was just a purple patch

I think Palace would have lost to our first team.

5 straight seasons now we’ve gone into the last 4-5 games with nothing to play for and we’ve been in mega beach mode in most of them. I may be right to think we’ve not won any of our final 3 games in in any of the seasons from 20/21.
To much of a “that’ll do” attitude around the club.
I’d have taken this scenario in December definitely but it has very the feel of a situation that’s occurred in previous end of seasons going into pre seasons.

I'm willing to give Rodrigo and Djiga another go against Brentford. Got to pick our first choice team other than that though.
