Crystal Palace 4-2 Wolves: Verdict Thread

I can only speak to my personal experience, but it definitely meant more/hurt more when I was a STH. That, of course, doesn't mean any one posters views are worth any more, outside of seeing some of the pictures and patterns that you don't see on TV, of course. There are season ticket holders of twenty years who's opinions on football aren't worth shit to me, same as there are for the more casual fan/observer.

Reflecting on the morning after, were we being too pessimistic after a pretty meaningless game? Is it just a bit of a bollock dropped from Vitor selection-wise?
I think this was vic's version of last chance saloon selection wise, and a good few missed the chance.
He's fuming (in print) this morning.

I think so yes. Talk of regression to the mean for example, our mean is somewhere between winning six games in a row to losing three. We also had a number of players involved that will soon be off, so while we talk about the financial importance of finishing as high as possible, some of the players involved likely have other priorities. The performance last night, and to a less extent against Brighton are not what I have become used to seing since Xmas.

Big summer though as we all know.

It's this. Vitor went to far in the changes, I get dropping Gomes and Djiga in but the rest should have been as normal but have to remember that he hasn't had much opportunity to try things previously as he had a pretty urgent job to do.

I am pretty sure he will go full strength on Sunday now though.

And for no reason other than a fuck you to Lopetegui....how Palace managed Ward's final home game is how you treat players who deserve a send off.

It was a bollock drop, I don't think it's pessimistic to reflect on what that showed about the state of the squad though against a Palace side who were even weaker in terms of missing their best players and had every reason to not be overly interested.

Without sizeable improvement over the Summer Rodrigo and Djiga aren't first team options as starters at RWB and centre half and that's a concern as neither were cheap.

We'll see what happens on Sunday, but if we perform similarly there's a pattern of dialling it in at the end of 4 consecutive seasons, which with other factors has continued into slow starts the following year. That's 4 years with 4 different managers, that'd be cultural

It’s an over reaction to go straight away ‘we’re battling relegation next year’ like it was an over reaction to say Vitor had sorted all of our problems post the 6 game run.

For me it just shows where we are. Outside the first 11 there is a big drop off in quality, which needs to be addressed.

Difficult to draw exact conclusions with it being an end of season ‘meaningless game’ but hopefully it prompts the club to not rest on the fact of the last 3/4 months as we’re fine.

It both is an overreaction and it isn't.

It's never nice to lose 3 in a row but one of those games was against Man City (which we could've won) and one was a decent performance against Brighton. From where we were earlier in the season to here... I mean that's the first 'O'Neil' performance we've had since Chelsea away at the end of January. It's definitely an overreaction to ignore the previous 4 months and suggest that we're now going to be relegation candidates on the back of a game where we played our 3rd choice keeper, had a lot of experimentation, clearly had a few missing with injuries and made a double half time sub. We're not going to be relegation candidates because Vítor is an excellent manager who, if he's given a stable pre season and some smart investment, will definitely improve us.

On the other hand... This is the Premier League, teams will work you out sooner or later and we have owners who don't want to own us. We saw a hint of it in the United game and then against Brighton where they both played through our high press far too easily. We need to be capable of playing more than just 1 or 2 ways and we need varied personnel who will affect our basic identity in different ways. I think last night definitely cast doubts over several of our fringe players and we're definitely going to lose several of our first team regulars (including a world class, game deciding player who will be impossible to replace). It's going to be a big summer for recruitment which is always a minefield at the best of times even before you add in the Fosun factor. They could easily leave us desperately short in several areas again, hope that Vítor covers those gaps and hope that there are 3 worse teams than us.

Losing 4 in a row would be a kick in the teeth .

I know it is not comparable , but remember how both Lage and O'Neil finished off in the final full season with us - both were dreadful finishes , and that then carried on into the following season .
Vitor is not like those two Managers , so I'd like to see us very invested against Brentford and getting a result . They concede a lot of goals , but score a lot as well . They'd had a fine season and are well up the table and have been up there for most of the season .

Vítor seemed quite upset by the result in his post match presser, I can't imagine we'll be flat against Brentford.

Then again, Brentford do have something to play for as 8th could get Europe.

It's possible, but that 5 fold pays out at 63/1

One thing, I thought we looked significantly better last night when Munetsi came on - I appreciate this coincided with Cunha also coming on, but Munetsi pressed well and changed the dynamic of our attack.

He certainly made it very clear that he wasn't happy with any of the Palace goals and had to stop himself at one point from saying too much . He only has one game to fix it though , and listen if we get the win we'll all be happy and start dreaming once again about next season .

Think so. Chances are we'll finish anywhere between 12th and 17th again next season, unless we drop a real bollock in the transfer window.

I'm not sure that the Brentford game means a great deal in all honesty. If we win it won't change anything about what kind of player we need. It would be nice to have the extra unexpected prize money for finishing 14th but we shouldn't have any excuses not to spend in the summer anyway, we're going to have a 3rd successive summer with £100M+ coming in.
