O'Neil aka GONe

Blades fan in peace.

It's looking like Gary O'Neil is the favourite to become our new manager. Should we be optimistic? Seemed like he had you guys playing decent football before it all went wrong in the second season.

Good luck with the upcoming season and please give us Tommy Doyle back.
It might be fun for a while, but it will be chaotic and end in tears I'm afraid.
You can have Doyle back for 10m quid please.

He's a bellend, and fraud. You might start ok, he'll be popular amongst the players early doors because he's one of the lads, but he'll get found out soon enough, he might be a decent coach but he's tactically miles off it. He also dresses like he serves up 3 for £100 at half time and that pisses me off no end.

I actually think he could do ok in the Championship, at least in his first season.

The main issues, especially towards the end, were a complete lack of control and inability to organise a defence/defend set pieces.

He needs to tone the detail down massively though, sounded like he really over complicated things tactically and thought he was a lot more of a master tactician than he actually was.

I live in Sheffield and so watch a lot of Blades through proxy, heard this rumour today and was thoroughly annoyed, can't escape bloody O'Neil it feels like.

The most constructive thing I can say is he seemed unable to organise a team or work on details or game plans. The transformation from Wolves from him to Vitor is stark.

He came in as we hit a new low
Did a decent job initially
Got done over by our not signing players policy
Ruined the season

He had a plan to play 4 at the back for last season
Let down by our new sign players the manager doesn't want policy
Stuck with the plan anyway
Hired a set piece coach
Conceded goals for fun from set plays
Fired the set piece coach
Told the world we couldn't beat anyone in the top half
Told us all the players were crap and he was getting the best out of them
Lost all control of the team. No authority.
Got some new teeth.

Sometimes you will look quite good. He doesn't play awful football.

However every time you lose the ball you will look in mortal danger of conceding, regardless of where it is on the pitch. Oh and the 'defending' of set pieces. You wouldn't have it down the park.

Doyle is a good lad but Champo is his ceiling, doesn't have the pace or strength a level up.

Well we're crap at defending and our owners won't stop buying players from Bulgaria because AI tells them to. So this could be a fun season. Thanks for the responses!

He's a shite manager, sorry. I have no idea why the narrative outside Wolves fans is that he 'did a good job', might be because he has friends in the media.

First to claim credit when his Brazilian winger bangs one in from 30 yards but the last to take the blame when his team can't defend a set piece. He wants to come up with a new tactical plan for every game which will give you some small short term success in individual games but long term only leads to confusion and to every game descending into a ridiculous back and forth basketball match.

His behaviour after we were hammered 4-0 away from home midweek by a terrible Sean Dyche Everton team was utterly disgusting as well. He bottled coming over to us in the away end after the game and then lied about how he did in his post match presser. Whatever respect I had left for him before then (not much by that stage) completely disappeared after that.

Doyle is okay. He's very good on the ball and it's not like he ever really let us down with individual mistakes but he doesn't have the pace or physicality for the Premier League and definitely not in a double pivot which is what our new manager prefers.

Prepare to be dazzled, not by his excellent management or in game tactics but them gnashers of his do be shining bright.

More serious answer: He's shit, lacks any self awareness and refuses to blame himself for the shit tactics and players not knowing what they're doing.

I'm now totally convinced that said purple patch was entirely riding the emotional coattails of the 2-1 against Spurs.

I also can't forgive GO for losing the squad so badly that the likes of Lemina and Cunha have had their legacies here indelibly tainted. Fuck him. He doesn't deserve any success.

Sorry, friend.

Started off really poorly. Managed to halfway turn it around with some performances, notably beating Chelsea 4-2 away and Man City at home but the wheels were falling off again before the end of the first season finishing on 2 wins in the final 11.
Now, that was partly down to our clown show ownership makes no mistake about that, and we got a particularly raw deal from VAR during that season.

This season just gone he publicly wrote off games against the traditional big six in our opening games of the season, literal surrender. We won two of our first 16 games or 4 of his final 27 if that suits and were routinely conceding 3+ on average per game. Including getting slapped by Everton who put 4 past us after scoring 1 goal in 5.

Team discipline evaporated, club captain was stripped of the captaincy, O'Neil blanked the fans after said Everton game. Again, he should have gone about about six games earlier but you know, clown show ownership.

His final presser was him telling the BBC and our Club website we were at our"maximum" having just lost to er, checks notes, Ipswich.

After losing to a last minute set piece goal at home to Ipswich (a feature so common I knew we were toast as soon as they won the corner), he bemoaned the lack of quality at his disposal until it was pointed out that he had a team of internationals including 3 Brazilians as opposed to Ipswich with their predominantly League One squad and a defender signed from Accrington Stanley.

Vitor came in and immediately gained 7 points from 3 games - up to mid-December O'Neil had only won 9 points.

Also has no discernable back room team (mainly due to his lack of time in management) so was hiring support staff who were available starting with Shaun 'Dezza' Derry and Tim Jenkins.

Lemina did that himself. The bloke is a bellend. Has fucked off from every club very quickly because his attitude is toss.
I’m not laying it entirely at his feet, no way. Even if he hadn’t grown up (seemed he had; how quickly we forget), there’s no argument to say he goes out this way sans GO that holds water for me.

Good point. His team of Mr Joke Blokes was mortifying.

Of course though, all those pundits who love him can’t wait for him to take the helm at their own club. So you’ll be lucky to have him. What’s that? Oh, they didn’t mean it like that. Right.

he’s an absolute clown. he’ll commute from kent or wherever, he’ll throw anybody and everybody under the bus and you’ll concede more goals from corners than ever in your history. You could well be relegated.
