Our signings since 2020

£10m on Jackson Tchatchoua who didn't start yesterday. Kept out of the team by soon to be 34 year old Matt Doherty, who has never been a competent right back as long as he's had a hole in his arse.

More should be made of that when Doherty did come off, 10m Jackson Tctatchoua wasn't the first choice to replace him, but the aforementioned 11 games in 5 years Ki Jana Hoever.

Weird that the good ones have come in clusters as well. Almost as if veering from one strategy to another window to window doesn't work?!?
I don't even know what the strategy is now. It used to be to bring in young players for fairly cheap, develop them and enjoy the sweet sweet Excel rewards as all the numbers turn green.

But now we sign the likes of Rodrigo Gomes, Pedro Lima and Fer Lopez, who can't get in the team so how are they accruing value, if that really is the Real Quiz.

Yeah... in general broad terms, with the occasional outlier, recruitment has been an absolute turdfest for far too long.

Tangent from the Sunderland thread...I said I'd be surprised if you could consider 30%+ of our signings over the course of this decade to be a hit.

Well, you decide, because here's the full list (I'm going to exclude youth players who never played for us, but include youngsters who were signed clearly with an eye on the first team at some point):

So for me it's 14 out of 62 and a hit rate of 22.6%.
Difficult to disagree with that. Good research.

Some other "highlights" from the list:

Fabio Silva for £35m. Now given we actually somehow got most of that back in the end, it looks better than it once did. But still. He was awful, scored 4 goals for us (one of which was a penalty and one which hit him and went in), he was a diabolical character and we sold Diogo Jota to fund that.

Oh and as part of that deal, we immediately handed Liverpool £9m of what they paid for Jota for Ki-Jana Hoever. Who has started 11 league games for us in 5 years.

Yes, we were desperate when we signed Diego Costa. But he played like a 50 year old, genuinely. And he was on £100k+ a week. Scored one goal, which hit him and went in.

£5m on Bastien Meupiyou who never played for us then we let go for free in less than a year.

Double that on Nasser Djiga who has started one league game for us, looks out of his depth in the worst Rangers team for 40+ years and will probably never play for us again.

£24m on Tolu Arokodare who apparently we have no intention of playing alongside Strand Larsen, who we refused to sell. So may I ask what exactly the plan was there, I'm not sure we can afford to spend that on a sub?

£10m on Jackson Tchatchoua who didn't start yesterday. Kept out of the team by soon to be 34 year old Matt Doherty, who has never been a competent right back as long as he's had a hole in his arse.

Re-signing Matt Doherty. On a three year deal. And he's still playing.

I could go on.
I don’t understand why Tolu is not being given more pitch time.

That list just confirms that PSR was never the problem. The prick Shi hiding behind it is infuriating.
Even if the success rate was at about 40% we’d probably be in a comfortable and competitive situation now.
They got far to comfortable after 2 7th place finishes and things just kept sliding thereafter.

I just don't think Pereira knows how to use, for want of a better term, small flair merchants. He and his mate spent the summer rebuilding the team and they clearly wanted to fill it with big strong (and/or pacey) lads, and what little creativity left in the squad is being left conspicuously on the bench, even in situations where it would obviously help.

I think he was meant to be the JSL replacement but Newcastle never called our bluff.
If that was the case then we should have just taken the money (in isolation, JSL is never worth what they bid). We're up on the deal financially and that's all we (Jeff and his bosses) apparently care about, and if we're only ever going to play one...

Pretending Tolu can't play more than about 20 minutes when it's nearly November and he hasn't been injured at any point here or at Genk is some ridiculous gaslighting. Of course he fucking can. We choose not to.

Who are these bench warmers who would help? We sold all the good ones.

I thought the strategy this time was to restock the whole team for £10m-£20m a pop but then we spent £50m on Krejci and Tolu so who knows. It was the constant veering between relying on Mendes in one window and then empowering someone like Hobbs for the next few that left the squad needing a total refit this year. Also yo-yoing on how much say the manager gets each time. All ultimately a reflection of Jeff's indecision and megalomania.
