No Bear, so might as well get this started.

Probably repeating a few things already mentioned in the matchday thread here, but here goes.

YES, it was Manchester City (we'll forget people were saying it's a "good time to play them" before kick off etc) - but that was the most predictable result of the weekend right there.

I said it during the last two pre-season games, but we are a team that looks like it'll struggle to score goals, and we'll let in sloppy goals at the other end - which doesn't bode well. We are still 3-4 players short of having a competitive squad, and it's a shame that the powers that be are apparently happy to throw the first few games. We're going to be on an uphill struggle from day one, once again - and already find ourselves bottom of the league.

Obviously very early days, but Wolfe seems quite a way off the quality required. Not quite sure what he is? Didn't, or doesn't look like he can bomb forward and get at the opposition full backs - doesn't look skilful. Defensively he reminded me of Berra with his backing off. Doesn't look overly physical. If he was top of our list, or our top target for that LWB role, we're in trouble. I hope he improves - and fast.

The Hoever experiment over on the other side has been put to bed after one game. He's alright as a squad option. Not one you want to call on very often, but for a few cup games here and there and to throw on for the last 10 minutes to close a game out, he'll be ok - but it's absolutely laughable that he's started a PL game for us in 2025. Obviously we've got Tchatchoua coming in who will replace him - and we need to hope that he is of the quality required, but when he disappears in January, we're going to be stuck back with Hoever again. It's not good enough.

Agbadou is a real concern. His pre-season form was generally dismissed - but if he's bringing that in to the proper season, we're in real trouble. Really, really sloppy today - gave the ball away pathetically for their second which kills the game. Needs to get back to the level of last season ASAP. Don't know what's going on there.

I'm not quite sure why Vitor waited so long to make the changes. As I said in the matchday thread - if you're throwing those players on after 70 minutes, why hasn't he thrown them on after an hour when it's 0-2 and anything can happen? A rare blot on his record today, as generally he's pretty quick or spot on at making substitutions. Thought he got that wrong today, and whilst I can see WHY he started with Munetsi and Bellegarde, I think you've got to play at least one of Arias or Fer from the start. Wrong calls today, but a point made to Jeff Shi & co, not that it was needed.

For them, I thought Reijnders looked quality. Joao Gomes is a tough player to come up against but he met his match today. Reijnders ran the show. I think City will push Liverpool close this season, but of course, they'll get harder games from about 16 of the other clubs in the league than what they had today.

The Jota tribute was excellent and I had a tear in my eye watching it. I believe his wife & kids were sat next to Neves (?) so I'm sure she appreciated it.

To say that was a deserved result would be an understatement given Fosun's laisez faire approach to our most crucial transfer window since promotion.

Bellegarde displayed a level of ineptitude on a par with the Chancellor of the Exchequer.
Andre delivered a masterclass in anonymity.
Wolfe was tepid.
Gomes was less useful than a health & safety advisor.
Classic North Bank support, with around 75% leaving before the 90 to beat the traffic

Plus points - Gomes & Bueno both looked lively and Munetsi would have been a threat if he could stay onside.

We have visibly moved backwards in the last 12 months and in all honesty are about 4-5 decent players away from a side capable of consolidating a lower-mid finish.

Let's hope we do some decent business when our transfer window opens in the third week of January.

Odd game. Painful to get beat and the difference in cutting edge was obviously night and day. However, even excluding the powerful Diogo stuff that was a better atmosphere in the ground than any game last year. I was pretty encouraged by significant sections of the game. A better experience than I was expecting.

I'm confident he'll sort himself out soon enough knowing he's got Santi Bueno breathing down his neck

Patricio
Bennett Coady Boly
Doc Moutinho Neves Jonny
Costa Jimenez Jota

Our first game back. How many of today's team would get in. 2? 3?

Sorry I’m pleased you’ve found positivity out of this nevertheless they outclassed us only where it mattered.
The fall in expectations is striking that people think that wasn’t that bad.
Probably the lowest in quality a side we’ve fielded in the top flight since 2012.

A stroll in the park for City. A lot of holes in our squad that are not going to be filled.

Playing decent for 35 minutes and giving it a go for 20 minutes second half doesn’t translate to getting a positive result next week.
Those who’ve stated it’s all ok because the window doesn’t shut for 2 weeks, well this is the outcome of going into GD1 at least 4 players short.

Vitor thinks the scoreline was unfair.

Standard comments from him. "they took their chances, we didn't" - "I'll take the good things away and we'll work on the areas we need to improve and try to be better next week".

Said the club know what needs to be done and wants 3-4 more players. Very much shoved the onus on Jeff & co, quite correctly.

I think I agree. I haven’t walked away terminally depressed as I did after all GON’s home games last season

You can't just take two of our best players and our captain out of last season's starting XI and replace them with squad mediocrity and expect to seriously compete, that's been obvious all summer and painfully clear on the pitch today.

My concern is that we've already signed our replacement stars in Arias and Lopez and anyone else we sign before the end of the month (and that's not a given) will be the 4th/5th choice targets that will just make up the numbers rather than actually provide the competition and quality we're obviously desperate for

To have lost the players we have and only started within one debutant is ridiculous. Jinky summed Wolfe up very well, obviously only one game but he looked well short of what is needed from a WB in VPs set up. Says it all that of the two Hoever was probably the better player today. Wolfe wasn’t aided by Toti receiving the ball in such a way that it was clear to everyone where he was going to pass it next, as he turns with the ball behind him and his only pass is to Wolfe. City just kept closing him down so Wolfe’s only pass was down the line and City got the ball time and again. That doesn’t excuse lukewarm defending though.

Gomes only player to come out with much credit. Thankfully we won’t play teams as good as City every week but we’ll have to do a lot better to get anything against lesser teams.

What options did Wolfe have when he did get the ball?
Bellegarde 😂 or back to Toti 🙄
