Best holiday destinations

Oh don't get me wrong, I love the Wainwrights. But the maps he drew are seventy five years old. Things do change.

I used to do that but tbh the Apps are smashing it now. We’ve got it installed on 2 phones, and carry 2 battery packs so there’s probably about 16 hours worth of charge if required. The hikes are downloaded beforehand so there’s no requirement for a phone signal and they’re pin sharp in accuracy. Linked to an Apple Watch too so you can effectively keep your head up and keep walking. I like that you can plan your own hike or just effectively rock up somewhere, and within 2 minutes have a hike downloaded which suits your available time/distance/difficulty requirements and you’ve got the full terrain type and elevation profile too.

We use Komoot for the mountain biking and funnily enough a club member organised a bit of an epic ride on Saturday going old-skool with a map. There was something nice about that but in the end became stop-start, stop-start, turn around, look for a gap in the hedgerow etc etc.

Seems a bit of a shame those map and compass skills are being a bit lost but things are changing pretty rapidly and I’m down with the kidz on this one.

Yeah I get the apps etc are excellent but even with all the back ups, I'd rather carry a map/compass as another back, it's bullet proof. Also cos I'm a weird old man I actually enjoy using them.

You can get the updated editions of course. TBH I stick to the originals though and deal with any change it it crops up. There are very few, even in the valleys, and hardly any on the fells. What the Wainwrights do, uniquely IMO, is give you a sense of scale and place that are all key elements of knowing where you are and not getting lost in the first place. Fairly sure his drafting of routes in aspect is unique. Where he does make notes on terrain and effort required they remain completely accurate today. Then again, no bugger reads anymore!
 
I think his prose is enchanting. His descriptions of the north face of Fairfield and of Great End completely give you the air of the majesty of the cliff faces and scree in those places.

I’m a paper map guy as well, draw the route on them if you had to, fantastic battery life as well, never ever had to charge one
 
I buck the trend when it comes to this thread, don’t own a copy of Wainwright walks, never been to Scafell Pike, or visited the Giants Causeway.
Anyway off here next Tuesday (Playa Blanca) for some 5star, all inclusive, preferred Club indulgence.
It is called Dreams though.

Done plenty of normal cruising but this intrigues me. Watching a recent documentary on Viking and the way they navigate all the locks has me even more keen to try it.
 
After flipping all over the place in deciding a destination for my birthday next year have finally sorted it.

Fly into Montreal - and take in the F1 race
Then drive to Toronto and then some driving around from that base inc Niagra Falls (Niagra on the Lake looks a stunning little town to visit on the drive back along the southern side of Lake Ontario.

So any suggestions for the areas greatly received.

Happy with that as never been to Canada.

Have a our dog holiday in the Lincolnshire Wolds this year. Cottage on a farm with a many acres for the dogs to explore.
Later this year off to Madeira as well and staying in Ronnie 7's hotel.

Tough spell for the wife last year with her health and holidays were cancelled, so making up for it this year, starting in 2 weeks for her birthday trip to NYC.

Niagara on the Lake is beautiful, we went there last year when we stayed with friends just over the border in Lewiston. Wayne Gretzky's winery is near Niagara on the Lake, had a very nice afternoon lunch and wine flight there.
 
I lived in Ontario for 6 months many years ago, and have been back a few times since. Niagara on the Lake is indeed lovely. Go on the Maid of the Mist at the falls - it's expensive and cheesy, but absolutely brilliant. In Toronto I would suggest the CN tower, eating in Chinatown (possibly the best one I have been to) and go to see the Blue Jays - Canadian sport is a much nicer experience than the US. Quebec City is also nice if you have time - in both Montreal and QC they'll appreciate it if you try to speak a bit of French.
