Horse racing

My brother and I are going to the Commanders week 1 game at home against Arizona September 10th and the day before we are going to the Colonial Downs racetrack to watch some horse racing. Neither one of has ever been to watch horse racing before, so just a couple of questions for those on here familiar with it:

In general, what is the best way to bet for first timers or just in general? Betting tips in general?
Anything else we need to know?

Think of a word/place/thing and find a horse relating to it!

Each way is only really worth it on high odds

Kilcruit turned over at 1/12 on hurdles debut. Bit late to the party on this, but I'm still convinced it wants further than 2m. Ferny Hollow looked pretty impressive on chase debut after a year off the track. Dug in well to score relatively easily and will be much better for the run.
